Present Day: January 24th Somewhere of the coast of Sir Lanka

Aboard the USS Montana a nuclear attack submarine Captain Herbert Reynolds one of the navy’s most decorated submarine commanders just ordered the Montana to go to periscope depth. Cursing at 23 knots the Montana was 300 miles southwest of Bombay headed due south. “Captain Reynolds! Sir this just came in.” Lieutenant Rogers replied. Picking up his glasses only to read the dispatch; confirmed launch site approximately 60 miles south of your present location. News of the attack on Mecca reached the Montana a few hours earlier which only intensified the anxiety among the crew. “Lieutenant chart a course heading for due south. This launch site could only mean that missile was launched from a nuclear sub of what class we have got to find out before it launches another missile.” The urgency in the captain’s voice spurred quick action by the crew. Picking up the inter come; “People we are about to put all that training to use now. There is a rouge sub out here and it is up to us to find it. I fear it is the one the whole world wants to get their hands on now.” “Captain, sonar is picking up something 35 miles east of here.” Scratching his head to decide whether to change course Captain Reynolds now was putting the pieces together. “Lieutenant, belay that order and head due east instead. I have a hunch that sonar sounding is that rouge sub.” “Very well Captain.”

On board the USS Lincoln Admiral Lovitt had just scrambled two recognizance jets. Following up on a recent report that the CIA had conformation that the attack on Mecca was launched somewhere in the Bay of Bengal the recognizance jets were ordered to search a 400-mile radius in the Bay of Bengal.

Moscow: January 24th

President Boris Sadinski after meeting with President Smith had his own suspicions as to who was responsible for setting off what could very well be Armageddon. Never before had President Boris Sadinski been in such an intense moment of decision. If he launched a retaliatory strike against Israel Iseral would have no choice but to counter with launching missals of their own. The truth of the matter is that if he or the US launched their missals the whole world would go up in flames. Thinking for a moment about what President Smith had said Boris picked up the phone and was in immediate contact with President Narevau. “President Narevau I am only going to ask this once! Did you or do you have any knowledge as to who launched that nuclear strike on Saudi Arabia?” “All I can tell you is that all of our missals are accounted for. There has been no breach of security by any of my staff. But what I do know that 2 days ago my ambassador to the Vatican disappeared. Vanished without a trace.” Replied President Narevau. ” That’s not just a coincidence because my Vatican Ambassador disappeared 2 days ago also. I suggest we meet in Zurich as soon as possible. I feel there is much more to this. I will contact President Smith and we will all meet in 24 hours.” Hanging up the phone inside the Kremlin Boris Sadinski now knew something more sinister was afoot.

Rome: Same Day, February 23 rd

Inside the Vatican Jim Baxter was detained by Vatican security. Pacing up and down the room Jim just couldn’t figure out why he was being held in this locked room when suddenly shots rang out behind the door. No sooner than he turned around only to see Larry and Jim Fix in the doorway. Guns drawn “Come there is no time to waste,” shouted Larry. Now running past two dead bodies the three men made their way back through the tunnel and emerged outside Tony Geonna’s coffee shop. “We can’t go back to the hotel now that’s the first place they will look. The airport is out too. Quick, here’s a taxi” yelled Jim Fix. “We got to get to the Swiss boarder.” responded Larry. Once inside the cab speeding north exiting Rome Larry turned around and said, “What made them detain you in the first place?” “It must have been what I didn’t ask Bishop Chamberland. He probably thought I was on to something which I was but, I thought my expressions would conceal my inner thoughts. I guess I was wrong the bishop has a keen sense of perception.”

As the taxi continued speeding north Jim Fix glanced out the back window and noticed two black sedans coming on strong. “Larry, we got company.” Do you have that assault rifle handy?” Yea I got it right here I just have to put these two pieces together” Make it quick their coming up on the right side.” “Driver, can’t you go faster?” yell Jim Baxter. This is what Larry Bolin thrives on, the high-speed pursuits. In his days as a New York police officer his handling of hot pursuits were legendary. In an instant Larry managed to trade places with taxi driver Bengi Sloski. Now behind the wheel with Jim Fix finally putting the automatic rifle together when shots rang out shattering the back windshield. Glass splattered all over Jim Baxter just as Jim Fix pulled the rife out and opened fire hitting the front and side of the first black sedan. In a flash the car burst into flames exploding as it was flipping over. Swerving to the left to avoid colliding with the burning sedan the other car was just a few feet away when Jim Fix opened fire again hitting the two front tires causing it to flip repeatedly before coming to rest on its side. “Stop the car we got to go back and find out who those guys are” yelled Jim Baxter. Pulling off to the side of the road Jim Baxter ran over to overturned car only to find three dead men inside. Searching for identification Jim reached into one’s jacket pocket and sure enough the identity was one member of Al-qaeda the other two were also persons that were on Interpol’s, the FBI,’s and the CIA’s most wanted list.

“Jesus Larry, these guys are not Vatican security. How the hell did we end up being chased by well-known terrorists?” quipped Jim Fix. Just then Jim Baxter pointed out “Bishop Chamberland has some more explaining to do. You can bet these guys weren’t acting alone. It’s even more imperative that we get to Zurich as quickly as possible.” Running back to the cab Tony got in the driver’s seat ” I know a quick route to the Swiss boarder It should only take about one hour.” ” Ok, drive” yelled Larry. Nobody spoke during the hours’ drive to the Swiss border. By now heavy wet snow was falling making traction that much more difficult. Just ahead Larry noticed heavy security checking every car before the gate rose to admit passage into Switzerland. “Do you have that other set of Identification with you Fix?” asked Larry. “We are going to need it now if we want to pass these guys.” Reaching into his back pocket Jim Fix pulled out three sets of different passports and handed one to Jim Baxter and Larry Bolin. “These should do the trick” “Just follow my lead.”

Inside the Vatican: Same day

It was Cardinal Sebastian’s influence over the Archdiocese that the conventional protocol in Papal succession was pushed aside so that only after two days since the passing of Pope Gregory the conclave of Cardinals was to convene. In the Cardinal’s private chambers General Romanoff standing by the window “In just a few more days the world will be yours.” “Just think never before in modern history has one man had so much power and wealth. Napoleon and Hitler tried but failed. You will be the one to succeed.” “Yes, General according to my plan everything is on schedule. Once I am Pope every government will be under my control. Now that I have finally the wealth of Kings.” Just then Bishop Chamberland rushed in. “Your eminence, the American Jim Baxter escaped. I have reason to believe that he is heading to Switzerland. We had the airport covered; he didn’t return to the hotel leaves one possibility Switzerland. What do we do now?” “Not to worry I have people in Zurich that will find them” Go now I have much to do.” replied Cardinal Sebastain. As Bishop shut the door behind him the Cardinal spoke. ” General, are you sure your men know what to do? The president of Iseral, the United States and your own President are supposed to meet in about 20 hours in Zurich.” Yes, Cardinal my men are in position and will stop this Jim Baxter from interfering.”

Present Day: January 24th, Bay Of Bengal

Aboard the typhoon class Russian Sub where 18 nuclear warheads leave little doubt as to the amount of destruction this lone sub could do to the rest of the world. Where one more launch could send the world into a tailspin of catastrophic destruction sending all humanity back into the cave of the Neanderthal.
