Why Didn't Africa Develop Like the West - Franck Zanu (Video)

In this 29 October 2026 published video, host Nick Freitas talks with Franck Zanu who argues that Africa’s economic and technological trajectory is shaped less by external colonialism and more by environmental factors, cultural orientation, and linguistic concepts.
Zanu argues that tropical climates do not demand the same level of winterization, long-term preparation, or proactive infrastructure upkeep as Western or northern climates. In a hot, year-round environment, survival and daily life operate differently than in regions with harsh winters. He claims that many African languages and cultural frameworks historically lack a focus on or equivalent single words for concepts like “maintenance” (proactive upkeep), as well as certain behavioral or modal structures. Zanu characterizes traditional African culture as “polychronic”—juggling family, community events, and social obligations simultaneously—whereas Western industrialization relies on a “monochronic,” rigid, punctual, and individualistic discipline tied to factory and machine time. He notes that African cultures are deeply communal, meaning personal or financial success is often shared or pulled into extended family and social networks rather than saved or reinvested through strict Western individualism. Zanu argues that most African nations were constructed by arbitrary colonial borders rather than evolving naturally from homogenous founding groups or unified national identities, comparing this lack of cohesive national identity to historical or global examples (like parts of Asia) that re-organized around shared identities after independence.
Zanu’s views have drawn significant public debate. Critics—such as commentators writing in African Arguments—who argue that he mistakes the absence of Western cultural or institutional forms for a lack of civilizational capacity, and that his thesis underplays centuries of external disruption, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and structural economic exploitation detailed by historians.
