I will build the roads!

It is tough for people to wrap their heads around what will happen to those services taken care of by the government in a world in which there is no government. They submit that there must be a government, and that it can be a benign monolith helping people go about their daily lives in comfortable and convenient manners, such as via the roadways. But, the true history of the matter is that, linguistically speaking, government and liberty are virtual antonyms of each other. One of the definitions of liberty is “freedom from government control.” And so, the question truly posed is: what happens to those outright controlled (by government) services in a free world?

A diverse and colorful landscape of roads the world would bear witness to if given the chance to allow entrepreneurs and visionaries map out the world’s roadways.  Not only would highways catering to different kinds of drivers be found throughout the land, but perhaps even airways on which people could travel through the sky on their skyboards or whatever.

Try this on for size?

You’re being kicked out of a US bar right at 2am. In this day-and-age, you look in all directions trying to see if there are any black-and-whites in the vicinity. But, in a world of private roads, you’ll just have to look for the nearest “Under the Influence” road coming equipped with all of its welcomed amenities; namely, the lanes are padded. Of course, because people can afford to make safe decisions for themselves in a freer world, they do. If they need private transportation in which they did not sit behind the wheel, they would have acted on it. But, here they find themselves, just a little bit tipsy, in their own cushioned lane, paid maybe at the entrance of the toll.

On this road, contracted police, firefighters and paramedics ensure everyone’s safety. And, if somebody is driving too recklessly, the private road reserves the right to refuse you service.

You make it home on this road safely. On the drive, you were never distracted looking in your rear-view mirror for too long scanning for police cruisers and so on. You put on some music and cruised home at a leisurely pace. You might have blown a .10 if you were breathalyzed.  On a public road, that would have meant instant expenses. $10,000 here, $5,000 there and a night in jail.

Next up, you’re on your way home from a busy day of work.You’re stressed out and you want to pop open that after-work beer a bit earlier than you on a public road would be allowed to. You don’t drink much at all, but you’re craving something hoppy. Well, no need to live parched,my friend, for that is where fore the drinking roads exist. On those streets, there’s nothing wrong if you pop open a drink of your choice. But, of course, be responsible, for you will be held accountable for your actions.  Sames goes if you want to light up a friendly plant turned terrorist by government jealousy, the plant marijuana.

Here is statist logic as applied to lunch: “How can I be sure someone will make me a sandwich for my lunch? I neeeeeeeeed lunch! How will they get the grain to make the bread? How will they transport it? Who will pay for the building and equipment to make bread? What if they make bad bread? What if they charge $1000 for one sandwich? What if they decide not to bother selling sandwiches anywhere near me? Ineeeeeeeeed lunch! What if they just do nothing??!?!? I’ll die!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

I am not so much concerned with how the roads will be built. I imagine that there will be companies producing and shipping heavy machinery, concrete and plenty of people with the knowhow to put together safe and well-kept roads.  Roads must be one of the first innovations of man, and so it is ironic to me that these are the apparent mystery for people trying to imagine a world without taxpayer-funded state run anything. We’re really good at building roads. We’ve been building them for thousands of years. They are the neural pathways of civilization’s infrastructure and I think that we would get the job done.

So, who will build the roads?

Anyone who is interested in providing a service satiating a longstanding demand.  Anyone who is interested in residual income, for, once the road is built, all that’s left is to collect tolls and maintain. Surely, the bottom line in private roads is a good one. And, they aren’t going away.
