Just Like The Original: San Francisco 49ers Looking For Gold

SOURCE:[Kitco News] – As NFL fans gear up for Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, the San Francisco 49ers will try to honor their team name by striking gold in the Big Easy.

The California Gold Rush was the largest gold rush in U.S. history, seeing hundreds of thousands of people of different cultures and backgrounds swarm the Golden State. It would turn out to be the catalyst that built the city of San Francisco.

The first wave of people looking to strike it rich came over in 1849 and were later dubbed ‘forty-niners’.

“What the 49ers are doing down in New Orleans this weekend is going after those gold Super Bowl rings,” said Ed Allen, head interpreter of the Gold Discovery Park Association, a non-profit cooperating association for Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, CA. “They’re literally going for the gold, and a few diamonds too.”

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is where the gold rush began in 1848 when James W. Marshall made a discovery at Sutter’s Mill and in turn, kicked off the country’s biggest gold rush.

Marshall made the first gold discovery in January 1948, Allen explained. “That sets off the largest mass migration of human beings ever up until that time,” Allen said. “The state of California had 8,000 to 12,000 people in it. And the very next year, 1849, 90,000 people arrived, then, in 1850, another 90,000 arrive.”

In total it’s estimated that roughly 300,000 people from around the world came to California during the gold rush.

A very large amount of gold was discovered during the California gold rush. Allen points to the Dahlonega, GA gold rush of 1828 as a comparison in terms of the volume of gold discovered in California.
