How Can I Track Precious Metals On Social Media?

You can invest in gold three different ways: purchase the physical asset, purchase shares of a mutual or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that replicates the price of gold or they can trade futures and options in the commodities markets. 

Retail investors most often buy gold bars or coins. These can either be produced by private mints or governments. 

Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that invest in the precious metal or shares of mining companies offer a more liquid and low-cost way to invest, while gold futures and future options might better suit institutional money. 

Buy Gold And Silver Bullion

Gold can be purchased in the form of bullion as a coin or bars. Precious metals dealers offer this in a retail setting or also online. 

Bullion bars come in sizes ranging from less than an ounce to 400-ounce brick. Bullion coins include American Gold and Silver Eagles, Canadian Gold and Silver Maple Leafs, and more. There are also semi-numismatic coins such as pre-1933 gold coins, but that is not a strict metal investment. 

Physical metal is good in the event of a financial crisis.

Buy Gold Funds

Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds might be a liquid and low-cost entry into the gold market.

SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was founded in 2004 and is one of the oldest ETFs. Shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange and can be bought or sold at any time, like stock. Each ETF share is one-tenth of an ounce of gold. 

With gold approaching $2,000 per ounce, then the shares trade at $200 per share. GLD invests in bullion, while other funds might invest in bullion and in shares of publicly traded companies in the business of gold mining, refining or production.

Gold stocks rise and fall faster than the gold price, and individual companies face political factors and others, unlike holding physical gold. 

Buy Gold Futures Options

Experienced investors might consider options on gold futures or options on a gold ETF. Such contracts are the right to buy or sell gold at a specific price for a certain amount of time.

Options can be used whether you think the gold price is going up or going down. If you guess wrong, the maximum risk associated with buying options is the premium you paid to enter the contract. 

One can buy put and call options on gold futures through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange or a futures brokers. SPDR Gold Share ETF options are available to investors and can be traded in a standard brokerage account that has received approval for options trading. 

Some traders buy and sell gold futures contracts on the CME under the symbol of GC so as to speculate on short-term moves higher or lower in gold. 

Buy Gold Mining Stocks

Many investors turn to gold mining stocks, which are based on the success or failure of gold mining companies and their capital and generate profits. 

ETFs are good as part of a portfolio diversification strategy.
