The second is numismatic value, and this is where it gets gray. Coins are often worth more than their metal, based on rarity, condition, year, and where they were minted. Limited-edition coins, historical coins, and rare dates can carry a large premium over their melt value, and pricing them takes real expertise. A coin’s price should fall in line with similar coins of a similar year, metal, mint, and condition. If an appraiser tells you a coin is worth less than the metal in it, that is a red flag on its own.

Red Flags of a Dishonest Appraiser

They aren’t PNG or ANA members. The two big names in numismatics are the Professional Numismatists Guild and the American Numismatic Association. Membership isn’t everything, but it signals accountability, much like a license signals a doctor met a standard. Ask whether an appraiser belongs to one or both.

The price is off. The easiest way to spot a bad actor is a lowball. If an offer comes in below the metal value itself, or well under what comparable coins sell for, walk. Use price averages for similar coins as your yardstick.

They use high-pressure sales tactics. Limited-time, one-time offers and any sense that you must sell right now are manipulation. These tactics are sometimes illegal. Disregard anyone who implies your coins will lose half their value tomorrow.

They can’t identify counterfeits. Fakes get better every year, and a real expert knows the tells. Ask an appraiser how they identify a counterfeit and compare answers.

They give you no recourse. Reputable appraisers, especially PNG or ANA members, agree to be held accountable through arbitration. A questionable one hides behind “no refunds” and offers no way to dispute a bad deal.

Green Flags of a Trustworthy Appraiser

Not every appraiser is out to get you. Here is what a good one looks like.

They have a reputation. The coin world is small and runs on word of mouth. A good appraiser’s peers will vouch for them, and a bad one doesn’t last long ripping people off.

They educate you. Honest appraisers are enthusiasts. They will happily field your questions and explain the backstory of a coin, rather than rushing you to a number.

They apply no pressure. A good appraiser’s job is to give you the information and let you decide. They tell you what the coin is worth and what they would recommend, and then they leave the decision to you.

• Be informed. Do as much research as you can in advance, even the basics help.
