Gold and Silver Buyers: Beginner Tips for Investing in Precious Metals
Precious metals are a timeless and meaningful way to allocate your capital. The more you learn, the more they tend to make sense. When people consider investing in precious metals, they usually think of gold or silver. Platinum, palladium, and others are also options, but most people start with gold and silver.
Depending on how much you want to buy and how much you have to invest, you can buy coins, bullion, and other options like jewelry or collectibles.
More Americans are coming around to this. Polls show the share of people who name gold their top long-term investment rose 11 points between 2022 and 2023, up to 26%. Here at CMI Gold & Silver, we believe gold and silver are an integral component of any portfolio.
Why Gold and Silver Belong in a Portfolio
Gold and silver belong in a portfolio for several reasons.
One, they’re real assets, so they’re tangible. You can hold them, and you can keep them in a home safe or a safe deposit box. It’s similar to real estate, but more portable, more liquid, and easier to transact.
Second, they have a low beta, which means their performance is generally less correlated with the stock market, especially Gold. Silver is more volatile, so if there is a lot of up and down in the other markets, you are likely to see that with Silver prices. If you’ve been told diversification is a powerful way to spread risk, precious metals are one of the best places to start.
Understand the Market
As you learn more about precious metals, you should understand some basic market mechanisms and how volatility affects prices.
Volatility is inherent across all asset classes. For example, gold’s price moving from $5,500 to under $4,000 this year reflects supply and demand. Gold hit a record high above $5,500 an ounce in late January, pulled back below $4,000 in late June, and trades around $4,100 to $4,150 now.
On its own, that sounds like a steep decline. But you want to look at the long term because it’s also important to compare all-time highs with annual performance. If you look at October 2025, a year ago, on our interactive spot prices, gold was at $3,900, and today it’s at $4,100. So over the last year, it’s up. But over the last five years, it’s up considerably. Five years ago it was $1,764. And over 10 years, back in October 2016, it was $1,255.
Over the last 10 years, gold has really appreciated. Obviously, that’s supply and demand, but all asset prices have gone up because inflation has eroded the dollar’s purchasing power.
You may see headlines that decry gold or say it’s down from its all-time highs. That is very different than trending down over many years.
So where is Gold going next? Nobody truly knows, but if you want to learn or even guess where metal prices may go, you can read research published by large investment firms.
For example, J.P. Morgan Global Research forecasts gold could push $6,000 an ounce by the end of 2026 and $6,300 in 2027. Remember, that’s a projection from a major bank, not a promise, but it shows how institutions are thinking.
Learn the Vocabulary
Before you buy, it helps to speak the language. A handful of terms cover most of it.
- Spot price. The raw market price of the metal itself. It’s the baseline everything is quoted against.
- Premium. What you pay over spot for the finished product. If the spot price of a one-ounce silver bar is $20 and it sells for $26, the $6 is the premium. It covers refining, minting, and the dealer’s cost.
- Bullion. Bars and coins valued for their metal content rather than collectibility.
- Coins. Government-minted, and they carry a face value as legal tender. They usually command a higher premium because of the minting and the design.
- Rounds. Shaped like coins but with no face value. Their worth is purely the metal, so they carry a lower premium.
- Bars. The lowest premium of the bunch, which makes them the most efficient way to buy metal per dollar.
- Junk silver. Circulated pre-1965 US coins that are mostly 90% silver. The name is a misnomer, since they have real metal value, just no collectible premium. You can learn more on our 90% silver page.
- Numismatic. Collectible coins priced on rarity and condition on top of their metal content. Scammers also most often oversell these.
Gold vs. Silver for a New Buyer
Say you’ve got $5,000 to start. How you split it between gold and silver depends on what you want out of your portfolio.
Today gold is around $4,135, so let’s call it $4,000 for this hypothetical, and silver is around $60. You could buy one ounce of gold and about 15 ounces of silver. You could go all gold, or all silver, or some split in between. That’s not for us to decide. What works for someone else may not work for you, so do your research, set your own goals, and build from there.
The real question is what kind of investor you are. Are you more of a volatility trader? Do you like those spikes? Are you willing to take on more risk for the possibility of higher prices? Silver gives you more of that. If you want the steadier anchor, that’s gold. It just depends on your goals and what you have.
Gold Still Holds Its Reserve Status
Central banks, like the Federal Reserve and its counterparts worldwide, set the tone for what’s going to happen. They don’t know the future any better than the rest of us, but by maintaining gold as a reserve asset, they lend gold more credibility and liquidity.
That held true even through 2026’s high-yield environment, which normally works against gold. At the London Bullion Market Association’s October conference, Bank of Italy deputy governor Sergio Nicoletti Altimari called gold “a safe haven asset, probably the safe haven asset, as proven by its performance over time and across a broad range of crises.” Central bank gold demand is still projected around 720 tonnes in 2026, lower than last year but well above where it sat before 2022.
Avoid Scams
Scams are a real problem in this industry, and avoiding them is one of the most important things you can do as a buyer. The best protection is working with a reputable dealer, but it helps to know the common tricks. We cover these in depth in our guide on how to spot gold and silver scams. A few of the common ones:
- Padded spot prices. A dealer inflates the market price to hide their real markup while claiming to charge “low premiums.”
- Bait and switch. The advertised item is suddenly “sold out,” and you get pushed toward a higher-premium alternative.
- Hidden fees. Surprise processing, handling, or “insurance” charges that show up at checkout.
- Counterfeits. Gold-plated fakes, false purity stamps, or coins weighted with tungsten to fake gold’s heft.
- Fake storage. Fees for metal supposedly held in a vault that doesn’t exist, including the “courier scam” that has robbed elderly investors of millions.
- Overpriced “rare” coins. Telemarketers marking up collectible coins 50 to 100% or more, when standard bullion runs about 5 to 7% over spot.
Fortunately, adopting a few good habits can help protect you from nearly all of the major scams. First, work with an established dealer that has a real history and a physical address. Next, learn what a fair premium looks like (roughly 5 to 7% over spot for gold coins, 8 to 12% for silver), and finally ignore cold calls and “limited time” pressure, get everything in writing, and test what you buy.
The Bottom Line
If you want to take the plunge and foray into precious metals, make sure you’re not paying an exorbitant premium. Knowing the market, the vocabulary, and the common scams gets you most of the way there.
