Seven Ways To Recycle Cigarettes And Kick Butt

In a previous post I had written about New York wanting to start a program on recycling cigarette butts. but fortunately there is a clothing designer who is taking those cigarette butts  off the street and recycling them into fashionable clothing!

• An estimated 4.5 – 5.6 trillion cigarettes end up in the environment every year
• 1.35 trillion: cigarettes made in the U.S. in 2007
• 360 billion: cigarettes consumed in the U.S. of the 1.35 trillion
• 9 trillion: expected consumption of cigarettes by 2025.

Alexandra Guerrero, a Chilean fashion designer and her design house Project Mantis has come up with a way to use up those butts and create clothing.

Recycle Cigarette Butts into Garden Pesticides

Recycle Cigarette Butts Into Metal Protection, - A new study suggests expanding community recycling programs beyond newspapers, beverage containers, and other traditional trash to include an unlikely new potential treasure: Cigarette butts. Terming this tiny trash “one of the most ubiquitous forms of garbage in the world,” the study describes discovery of a way to reuse the remains of cigarettes to prevent steel corrosion that costs oil producers millions of dollars annually.

Could Cigarette Butts Be Recycled Into Home Insulation- A London community is studying an innovative technology which may allow for the recycling of discarded cigarette butts into home insulation. The community estimates an average of 4,000 cigarette butts are dropped in the town center daily, then collected during routine street cleanings and sent to the landfill.

Environmentalists Has Idea For Recycling Cigarette Butts- Baffico envisions collecting those discards at frequent buyback events and then using them to make products such as filling for gymnastic mats or even material for clothing, he said. So far, the plan has received about $1,500 in in-kind and monetary support.
