Why I Love Urban Gardeners

One of my favourite things about going to London is not only the break from routine (which we all need right?) but the fact that I get to travel by train (so blissful to have to sit there for an hour) and because it is so stimulating (country life is great but, well, sometimes it is a tad boring).

But really I think my most favourite reason is that I love seeing other people’s gardens. From the train and the street. And urban gardeners are especially interesting to this country bumpkin.

Part of me thinks it’s easy if you have half an acre or more to create a wonderful garden (this, of course, is just a theory) and it’s harder to do so when space is smaller.

And part of me knows that when I had a small garden, it was a lot easier to fill it with plants and have it looking good for little money.

But here’s the thing; if I lived in London with a tiny garden I’m still not sure it would look any good. And that’s because I’m not sure I would be bothered. I hope I would but, really, I’m quite lazy.

And that’s why I love urban gardeners. No doubt they’d love a bigger growing space but they get on and make the best of what they have. They’re inventive. They’re optimistic. They seem to bring beauty to what some might consider to be ugly corners. And they most definitely don’t seem to be lazy.

I think I could learn a lot from them, just peeking into their basements and up at their windowsills.
