A Front Garden Update
I don’t feel like I’ve done much gardening. As ever, it comes last on my list of things to do. And just lately, when it’s been glorious weather I have been on the sofa cuddling a pink-cheeked poorly child.
As I type, the sun is out and, naturally, there is someone on the sofa plaintively called “mummmmeeeeee” every so often. We’ve watched the Bee Movie, Little House on the Priarie and now I’m having a coffee.
I look out on our horrid back garden. There is so much wrong with it that I can’t even begin to put it into words but I have plans. And a deadline. And a husband rolling his eyes. We live in a very modest house yet you’d think it was a mansion, with all the work there is to do on it.
Still, the one place we have made a bit of progress is the front garden. Although, if you were to walk past you might not think so. The comments, particularly from old people, actually all from old people, still come thick and fast. What is it when you get to a ripe old age? Do they give out Permission to Be Rude slips with your Buss Pass?
There are three clematis that will weave themselves around the picket fence. Three fruit trees against the tall fence and some newly laid sandstone under the window. This will house our bench and will be somewhere I shall sit and drink coffee.
I seem to build my gardens around that – places to sit. Which no doubt explains the mess they are in. We plan to rotivate the large planting areas, there is still hardstanding for the bins to go down and a second path leading to them and the back gate.
An old sink needs to be filled with scented flowers, two japonicas need to be planted and some willow fencing has to be bought to hide the bins. Honestly. It is never ending.
But the one thing I keep saying to myself, as I stand by the gate and look at my husband’s handiwork is “this time next year this garden will look great”.
