The Europeans have done it again. Sort of Coal, a Danish company, has combined minimalistic Danish design with Japanese materials. Their focus is on white charcoal, which has the unique ability to naturally purify materials by attracting, absorbing and encapsulating harmful substances to its surface.

Sort of Coal recognizes that we are being exposed to toxins in our daily lives, whether that is in tap water, air, or beauty products. Their goal is to change your regimen to a healthier, purer lifestyle.

SOC’s production process is based on a cradle-to-cradle principle, meaning that a neat natural cycle is completed during the products lifespan. When making their white charcoal, SOC carefully follows Japanese traditions and using only the best materials. The highest quality branches are individually selected from slow growing, hard wood trees in the mountain forests of Japan and Korea. Don’t worry, each forest is maintained and harvested in such a way that encourages new branches are encouraged to grow. These new branches absorb higher levels of CO2 than their predecessors. Binchotan, Hakutan, and Kishu Bichotan are some of the kinds of wood used for the white charcoal. Natural minerals are trapped inside the white charcoal when it is made, and is later released into the water it is later placed in.

The white charcoal is made by going through a process called pyrolysis, a challenging ritual usually only done by artisans that usually come from a long line of charcoal makers.

Once the charcoal has been removed from the kiln, the heat is reused for a local spa.

One unit of Sort of Coal’s white charcoal provides enough purified water to enjoy at an average cost of about $1 a day for an entire month. By not buying plastic bottles of filtered water, you eliminate plastic waste as well as the carbon tally of transporting plastic bottled water around the world.
