Installing a Concrete Pool in Your Yard

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the best luxuries that you can buy for your home is your very own swimming pool. There are three main types of in ground pools that you can install, and where you live will likely dictate what kind of frame you get. However, the most durable and popular material to use is concrete.

Also, certain areas and cities in the country have laws that can require you to hire a construction specialist to get the job done, but whether or not you do it yourself the process is about the same. Keep in mind that to build a pool on your property will cost around $25,000, but they can be one of the most rewarding additions to your home. Here are the steps for adding a pool to your backyard.

  1. The first step you will have to do is to choose what kind of design, color and size you want your pool to be. Take a good survey of the space you have outside, and take note to see whether or not the digging process will be easy based on how many rocks are in your soil.
  2. Before beginning the process, make sure that you are not breaking any rules with your homeowners association, and either obtain a permit for building a pool or hire out a contractor to do that part for you.
  3. Rent out the necessary equipment and start to evacuate the area where the new pool will be installed. Figure out the planned dimensions of the pool, and begin to remove the earth in the area. It is important to note that you will need to make sure that your permit is approved at this point to avoid any run-ins with electrical lines in the ground or other obstacles that could potentially damage city property.
  4. After the hole is in the ground the next step is to grate the bottom of the pool. This part could require a certain amount of experience that you might want to hire someone to do, but if you plan on doing it yourself make sure that you even out the ground as much as possible. Doing this will make building the walls much easier and reducing the risk for errors later on in the process.
  5. Next, it’s time to start putting in the infrastructure for the walls by using metal rebars and pieces of wood to create the general outline of the walls. As you install the framing for the pool you will want to double check that everything is even so that the whole thing stays together much better.
  6. After this done you will want to hire a professional plumber who has pool experience to come and put in the plumbing and filtration system for the pool. This part would be tough to do on your own, and an experienced plumber will be familiar with all the codes and requirements for building in that area of your city. In addition to that, this would be the time to bring in an electrician as well to make sure that everything is in order, and check to see that the wiring works properly for the filters.
  7. After the plumbing and electricity is in check, it’s time to pour the floor of the pool using a cement truck. As the cement gets poured in make sure that it is done at an angle and has an opportunity to be smoothed out both during and after it is filled up enough.
  8. This is when you can start to put in your concrete cinder blocks to build the outside of the pool’s wall. It will then have to be reinforced with either tiles, a plaster coating or something that is moisture resistant so that the water will stay in the pool once it is filled up.
  9. Finally, fill in the outer rim of the room with a filler (consult your local contractor to compare the best prices) and then fill your new pool up with water!
