15 Toothbrush Art Sculptures

You would think that toothbrushes belong in bathrooms. What I find amazing is how many toothbrushes litter our streets and beaches. I would challenge anyone to walk at least five miles and not see some type of dental debris. This is not just a USA problem, I just came back from three months in the Yucatan, Mexico and toothbrush are also littering the beaches and streets in Mexico.

I Just Gotta Eco Ya

• 156 Toothbrushes an adult will use in a lifetime.
• 50 million pounds of waste toothbrushes enter each year on a landfill in the USA.
• $775 Million dollars is the total annual consumer spending on toothbrushes. (ACNielsen, 2002)
• Most Toothbrushes are not recyclable.

Toothbrushes can be reused in many ways, primarily for cleaning. Others use toothbrushes for painting, including fingernails. Some have put toothbrushes in the garden as a plant labeler. A few Marine Debris artists are using toothbrushes in their work to demonstrate the types of plastic that are polluting our Oceans.

1.) Andrew McNaughton an artist in Watamu, Kenya has created a series of beach trash art.

2.) One of Alejandro Duran’s  Washed Up: Transforming a Trashed Landscape used beach trash gathered in the Yucatan, Mexico. The marine debris art was throughout Sia Ka’an, Tulum, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve. This was his toothbrush statement.

Other artists are reusing toothbrushes in their artistic interpretation of found objects trash to art.

3.) George W. Hart Two Cavities toothbrush geo-disc is a colorful tribute to toothbrushes.

4.) Another piece by artist Gaille Faure called ‘Contraption’.

6.) Toothbrush welcome mat made with recycled toothbrushes for the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.  Art by Nadya Volicer’s “Smile”, Over half of the used toothbruses came from visitors to AVAM.  600 toothbrushes came Preserve who  make their toothbrushes out of recycled yogurt containers.

8.) A DIY project made with found objects. Nine toothbrush handles in a tin can. Would be cute toothbrush holder.

9.) Takahiro Iwasaki’s toothbrush sculpture art. Takahiro Iwasaki is an artist who creates landscapes out of found objects

10.) Toothbrush Caterpillar by Funky Tree Frog on Deviant Art. Fun craft for kids, cute!

11.) Decorating your fence with discarded toothbrushes would be an eco-catcher for sure. This looks like these toothbrushes are decorating a barbwire fence.

12. Not that this is art, but it could be! Toothbrush robots are fun and the vibrant colors have an artistic appeal.
