Does Organic Fertilizer Really Make a Difference?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

If you’ve gone to look at the fertilizer options in any chain or local store, chances are you can be easily overwhelmed by the amount of options available to you. Not only are there different brands for different plants for different situations, but there is the organic fertilizer versus non-organic fertilizer debate to consider.

So what is the difference between organic and non-organic fertilizer?

While both types of fertilizer provide the necessary nutrients to plants, the way they go about it is different. Organic fertilizers work to make the soil and the growing environment better, which, in turn, will impact the soil for future plantings. It is made up of all plant and animal based by-products. Organic fertilizer is the end result of processes that occur naturally, such as manure or compost. In contrast, non-organic fertilizer is chemically processed and made from synthetic materials in order to deliver rapid nutrition to the plants.

Delivery to the Plant

One of the reasons organic fertilizer is better is how the nutrients are delivered to the plants. Organic fertilizer reacts best with warm, moist soil. When placed in this environment, the nutrients are slowly released into the soil. This is effective because this is typically when the plants will need the nutrients. The nutrients will be released more slowly, however, because it needs soil organisms to break down the nutrients in order for the plants to access them. Chemical fertilizers have all of the nutrition ready to go for the plants, but the problem with this is that it can leak too deep into the soil where the plant is unable to reach it. The nutrients are also delivered in high concentration, so there is a risk of hurting the plant, as well.

The Environmental Impact

Although there are many pros to using organic fertilizer, the biggest reason you should use it is because of the environmental impact. Non-organic fertilizer, again, is typically comprised of synthetic material, and that material is derived for petroleum and natural gases. If this fertilizer is used in high concentrations, it is not able to be broken down as well in the soil which can lead to toxic buildup. The fossil fuels used are also released into the environment. While organic fertilizer can also have some buildup, the materials are generally able to decompose, thus not leaving a lasting environmental impact. Since organic fertilizer is also made from natural materials, there is not as much natural gas, which means there are less fossil fuels emitted. This is also what makes it more environmentally friendly.

When choosing between non-organic fertilizer and organic fertilizer from a place like Nature Safe, you do need to consider the needs of your plants and the long-term or short-term use you are needing, as well. Just remember the lasting impact you will be leaving on the environment and what can best help your soil for years to come.Pin It
