Things to consider about the "low carb, high protein" diet

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The “Stillman diet” formulated by Dr Irwin Stillman in 1967 is one of the most popular diet programs in the world. It emphasizes on a diet that contains relatively high amounts of protein, and low fat and cholesterol content.

This diet has multiple applications. It is used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and cut off fat; others use this diet program to lose weight. Weight loss is one of its benefits.

The side effects of this diet in the long run is what I like to discuss here.

Low carbs? Is that a good thing?

To those who are like to lose their fat, this is a good program to work with. But there is another side to this program. Sticking to routine for a long time results in Ketosis.

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body uses fat as energy, instead of glucose, which is bad. Ketosis is caused by the decrease in carbohydrate intake. Ketosis also forms substances called ketones, which can cause organ failures and gout.

Is high protein level a bad thing?

Nobody is against the low fat, low carb diet. But high protein levels have a negative side as well. It is not a very bad deal for bodybuilders as they ‘rely’ on protein and nutrition for muscle growth.

Still, high protein levels lead to more calcium in blood and less in the bones, which weakens the bones and lead to calcium deposits in kidneys. This is shown to cause osteoporosis and kidney stones eventually.

Then, what are the benefits?

All diet programs, all of them are designed to give us benefits for a given amount of time. This means that nobody should stick to any particular diet programs for a long time (especially this diet).

Having said that, this diet changes the body from a carb-engine to a fat burning one. It drastically cuts down weight and gives more room for muscular development.

This is not a permanent diet. After the goal is reached (cutting down fat, or increasing muscle), go back to a balanced diet. Our body needs everything in the right quantities.

Researchers have proven that only a balanced diet is the permanent solution to staying healthy. Believe this!

What did you do to stay healthy? Do you think that this diet is good for the long run?
