9 December 2011 – With the decline in the number of people who put their trust in medication and even professional psychological help, more and more patients with different concerns are turning to alternative medicine and treatment.
In the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, a drug is given to suppress the involuntary muscle motions triggered by episodes. Too much of this particular drug, however, may eventually lead to Alzheimer’s psychosis, and indeed, about 60% of patients suffering from the disease will go on to develop symptoms of the psychosis. This side effect conundrum is present in almost all drugs, though some of the more common prescription and over the counter drugs have only nominal, if annoying, side effects.
Worse still is the case for some medication used in psychological conditions – recently scientific evidence surfaced that they were only slightly more effective than active placebos, and only because of the marketing hype surrounding them. There have also been some concern for the growing dependence on such drugs and the possibility for building up a resistance to their effects.
The case of traditional talk therapy is not much better. While there are no side effects to speak about, the stigma associated with going to the shrink outweighs the benefits, especially since people easily build up resistance to the techniques used in talk therapy as used in counseling. Unfortunately for psychological patients, the talk therapy and prescription medication tag team is the prevailing typical way to treat many disorders ranging from depression to phobias.
