What are the causes of red eye?

From time to time, it isn’t uncommon for the eyes to become irritated and this can sometimes lead to redness around the white of the eyes. Before you head out for an eye test though, it might be worth considering some of the causes of red eye.
Most people will suffer from red eye at one point or another, but while the problem can look very alarming, it’s quite often caused by something very benign. Conjunctivitis, which is also called pink eye by some, relates to an inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and inner eyelids and is usually a viral, bacterial or allergic reaction that can clear itself up very easily.
Similarly, blepharitis is a condition based on inflammation that can be treated in just a few weeks and with proper hygiene can be sorted out even more quickly. Some people suffer from dryness that can cause redness in the eyes too and, while eye drops can sometimes help reduce the problem, it is often not something that needs much attention.
One problem some people experience – that is actually much less of a problem to worry about than it sounds – is a subconjunctival haemorrhage. This is very common and is caused by burst blood vessels in the eye. The issue will usually resolve itself in just a couple of weeks and is only really considered a problem if it is happening on a regular basis, as it could be an indicator of a wider problem like high blood pressure.
Some more serious causes of red eye, however, include anterior uveitis, corneal ulcers and glaucoma. These will usually cause discomfort and in some cases discharge from the eye and it is essential that you seek an examination with an optometrist if you think this might be the cause of the discolouration. You may then be given a course of drops or, if necessary, referred to a medical practitioner for further advice.
Another condition some people experience is keratitis, which is a redness of the eye which also comes with watery eyes and blurred vision. This is a corneal infection that can sometimes become very serious, so you’ll need to book an appointment with a specialist as soon as possible. If you wear contact lenses, this can be particularly problematic and you should avoid wearing them while seeking treatment.
If you do have red eye at any point and are concerned for any reason, perhaps the best thing to do is contact your optician or doctor. This might just give you the peace of mind you need or lead to more immediate treatment if necessary.
