Prostate cancer is a huge concern for me and the treatments are most certainly something you should look into and ask questions about. If you don’t your penis may pay the price.
Nine hundred and forty eight men who have been treated for prostate cancer were part of a survey conducted by physicians. This survey hoped to give the physicians an idea of the side effects linked to their treatment. 2.63% of the group complained their penis had shrunk.
And even though 25 men may not seem like a huge number, this isn’t the first study that’s looked into this adverse effect, explains Paul Nguyen, M.D., lead study author and a radiation oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in Boston.
“I think what our study brings home is that this is a real problem and it does affect men,” says Nguyen. “Many of the guys who underwent treatment for their cancer had never even heard about this effect—so this is something that we, as doctors, should be talking about with our patients.”
Nguyen’s research reports the subjects reported a los of only 1cm or roughly one third of an inch. There is research though that has some men losing between 2.5 to 3.5cm after treatment. (over an inch)
Even though researchers aren’t exactly sure as to why this happens they can only guess it has to do with surgery the removing of the prostate may lead to some tugging. Radiation could cause shrinkage due to some type of fibrosis that occurs resulting in size change.
Hopefully this research will encourge doctors to bring up this issue. Knowing what you can expect with any type of treatment helps you to choose what type of treatment is better for you. But there is a question hopefully guys can answer truthfully: Bein alive? or a smaller penis?
