Healthy eating tips for the vulnerable
A PROGRAMME to improve the health of people with learning disabilities has been launched in Glasgow.
The scheme teaches people about nutrition and a balanced diet and offers cooking information to allow them to make healthier choices about what they eat.
The 28 session programme covers trips to supermarkets, includes parents and carers and provides ongoing home support.
During a trial period it was found that more than half those taking part developed an increased knowledge of the benefits of fruit and vegetables.
Everyone on the course had a greater understanding of how to reduce their fat intake and participants were more able to make informed choices in shopping and preparing their food.
Michael Matheson, minister for public health, said he hoped it would help reach groups who have been noticed as having poorer health.
He said: “We want everyone in Scotland to understand the benefits of a healthy diet, yet we know that people with learning disabilities often have poorer health.
“That is why I welcome this creative new healthy eating pack, which has been designed specifically for people with learning disabilities to help them make better diet choices.”
The Learning Disabilities Healthy Eating Pack has been developed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and is funded by the health board, government and the Glasgow Learning Disability Partnership.
It has seven sections targeting specific areas: sugar, salt, food labels, fruit and vegetables, fibre, food for healthy bones.
