Don’t Put Talc or Cornstarch on That Tush – Clay Baby Powder is Best

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You’ve likely heard some of the risks associated with using talc baby powder, primarily the dangers of inhalation and the lung damage it can cause to your infant. Although it’s been a mainstay in nurseries for decades, informed mothers are turning to cornstarch baby powders in search of a healthy solution – without realizing the dangers of cornstarch.

It’s hard to understand the dangers of cornstarch options when we’ve been told that it’s safe, (just like talc used to be!) and why an all-natural clay baby powder is the only true safe solution to powder your bundle of joy or yourself.

Dangers of Talc Baby Powder – Why Natural Baby Powder is the Way to Go

So, we know about the inhalation risks and that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against its use, but there are more reasons to avoid using talc on your baby.

For starters, there is no actual evidence that talc baby powder does anything to prevent or treat diaper rash. Keeping baby rash free typically relies on keeping them clean and dry, and many parents just don’t think about drying baby’s tush after using those moist baby wipes. Often, they just put on a fresh diaper, allowing the moisture to self-dry – a no no.

Cancers are another concern about the dangers of talc. Talc is known to increase the chances of developing ovarian cancer in women and has been widely research. The capstone study came in 2003 when the prestigious journal Anticancer Research released their large scale review of 16 previously published results concerning the risks of talc and cancer. The analysis of studies involving almost 12,000 women indicated a 33% increase in the risk of developing ovarian cancer in women who used talc near and around their genitals.

So, it stands to reason that you wouldn’t want to put this near your child’s most tender regions whether they are male or female. Further issues that parents often encounter when using talc baby powder are bladder infections. Talc turns pasty when damp, and can literally block urine from being released and result in a variety of infections in the region. Clay baby powder offers a risk-free solution for parents wanting to protect their kids – and themselves from these possibilities.

Please do more research. Clay powder contains silica and alumina – both of which are linked to long term lung damage.

Clay will clump when wet – just like talc. This is not good advice.

I think it’s irresponsible to include corn starch in the title. Pure corn starch is by far the best and most healthy baby powder. It is anti fungal and antibacterial. It’s edible and non toxic. It does not cause problems when small amounts are inhaled.

Clay is not a good baby powder at all. It’s dangerous and provides no natural protective benefits. It is not risk free.
