Harvard Scientists Urge You to Stop Drinking Milk

Anthony Gucciardi

Vegans may have had it right all along; while raw, organic milk offers numerous health benefits, a Harvard researcher and pediatrician argues that conventional milk and dairy products alike are a detriment to your health – thanks to added health-compromising sweeteners.

As David Ludwig mentioned in his research, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, there have been countless pieces of research concluding the ill effects of sugar-sweetened beverages. The over-consumption of sugar has been tied to obesity, diabetes, inflammatory-related pain, and much more. And because of sugar’s negative effects on our health, even the United States Department of Agriculture, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other organizations are recommending against consuming calories from sugary drinks.

The one calorie-containing beverage they still heavily promote, however, is reduced-fat milk, where the organization recommends drinking 3 cups daily. This is where Ludwig questions the scientific rationale for such recommendations.

“This recommendation to drink three cups a day of milk – it’s perhaps the most prevailing advice given to the American public about diet in the last half century. As a result, Americans are consuming billions of gallons of milk a year, presumably under the assumption that their bones would crumble without them,” says David Ludwig.

As far as Ludwig is concerned, if the USDA is recommending to drink reduced-fat milk, it is also inadvertently encouraging the consumption of added sugars – a piece of advice that goes against all the research saying not to consume sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages. The idea of consuming low-fat milk or chocolate milk cancels out the whole reasoning for the recommendation in the first place since the fats are simply being replaced with dangerous sugars.

“The worst possible situation is reduced-fat chocolate milk: you take out the fat, it’s less tasty. So to get kids to drink 3 cups a day, you get this sugar-sweetened beverage,” Ludwig says. ”…we can get plenty of calcium from a whole range of foods. On a gram for gram basis, cooked kale has more calcium than milk. Sardines, nuts seeds beans, green leafy vegetables are all sources of calcium.”

The Case Against Low-Fat Dairy, and Other Dangers of Milk

Harvard researcher David Ludwig certainly has a point in analyzing and ultimately criticizing the USDA’s recommendations, but there is much more to the full-fat vs reduced-fat argument for milk and dairy products.

There are plenty of reasons to avoid certain fats such as trans-fats and refined polyunsaturated fats in vegetable oils (like corn, soy, sunflower, and canola), but the evidence for moderate consumption of saturated fat, which is found in milk, coconut oil, and grass-fed land animals, is coming to the surface. While saturated fat was villainized for decades, a 2010 analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that “there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of [coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease].”

Further, there are numerous benefits to drinking full-fat dairy products. In it’s most pure state (raw, organic, and coming from grass-fed cows), full-fat dairy has been found in research to potentially promote heart health, control diabetes, aid in vitamin absorption, lower bowel cancer risk, and even aid in weight loss. But while pure dairy could promote your health, conventional dairy may prove damaging.

Before you consume more conventional dairy, please educate yourself as to what’s in your dairy. You’d be surprised that there could be 20+ painkillers, antibiotics, and much more lurking in your milk.

Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us communism is bad for us.

The Chinese have known this for centuries. My boss and his wife asked me to get them a latte, but they were disgusted when I brought them a milk latte instead of soy. Apparently “You-ah should-ah know this-ah stuff-ah bad foh yoooo”

Soy is full of estrogen mimickers
        he-hooters & cancer
from what i have read anyway.

You got it, Soy is a process of soy beans as we know all soy beans in America are all GMO.

But of course, the way the make milk and then cook all the enzymes out, killing them, which would be the only reason to drink cow’s milk. not to mention the genetically modified corn and soy they eat, (forcibly, and meat) plus the hormones and antibiotics and horrible vaccine ingredients they give them.

Drink GOAT milk, raw, from a trusted source (your own goats you got from an organic farm, organic for generations).

They’re simply adding CANCER to dairy products and people are getting sick that’s why I don’t drink milk anymore but Almond Breeze.

There is hardly anything available in commercial supermarkets which isn’t health compromising… It sucks… You can’t escape it. We are being poisoned en masse, by every means possible… Air, food, water, medicine. You may as well eat what you want to because we are being killed regardless of our best intentions to be healthy.

They also tell you to get immunized and global warming is killing the planet. Not to mention Harvard pretty much runs the federal government right now. Hows that going?

    • Dr Richard Ruhling

The article did not mention the hormones and antibiotics in milk, nor disease in animals. There is quite possibly a cover-up of TB and Mad-Cow Disease. Many feed lots use animal manure mixed into feed to increase the protein. Why should we as mammals continue to nurse from a cow after our weaning? For an excellent video that fits this topic, and also shows how to reverse heart disease and diabetes, type 2, by eating better, visit http://RichardRuhling.com

I know we should be ashamed of living in a society with a life expectancy higher than our fore bearers but I like milk, raw is the best and I will continue buying McDonald’s super sized meals until the day my 90+ year old heart finally quits beating and I will also continue to grow my own non genetically modified organic produce. According to modern science, I only have about another 43 years to stop my evil ways. Monsanto is about at the end of the leash I deem acceptable to their existence I will not stand alone when I stand against them. I hate that company with a passion.

take a look at a milk container label, over 14 grams of sugar in each cup, enjoy your diabetes.

If you are concerned about your blood sugar being skyrocketed by consuming sugar, you should also know that one spoon of table sugar (sucrose) will raise your blood glucose less than one spoon of wheat. The sugar breaks down into glucose and fructose, but wheat contains more glucose than table sugar. If you want to avoid diabetes, quit eating sugar and quit eating bread, cereals, pizza, and any other produce that is made with wheat, barley, or rye (whole grain or refined are both bad).

Additionally, wheat contains a chemical that is addictive, which makes you want more and more, so you are likely to binge eat. Some doctors think that the obesity epidemic is a result of hybridization of wheat back in the 1970′s which had made wheat even more sugary.

We should forget the low fat craze. Not only do we need fat in our diets, the best fats are animal fats (particularly fish oil and grass fed beef fat), olive oil, and coconut oil. The other vegetable oils like corn, soy, and canola are harmful, not beneficial, even more so after genetic modification.

The conventional wisdom is upside down.

You are so misinformed. Meat is horrible for us, we are not even meant to eat it. Hence why vegetarians and vegans are so much healthier than you meat eaters.

Fish is the only thing we were supposed to eat, and at this point there is way too much crap in the ocean to make me want to eat fish.

Have fun living off of just rice! Cause that is the only option you left. While I quite enjoy my rice, I am Asian and its not for everyone!!!

Time to get rid of the house negro AND GRAIN FED PASTEURIZED MILK. Bring WHITE RAW milk back to America again and maybe to politics too.

    • Anonymous

Nonsense. There’s no extra nutritional value in raw milk. Just the dangers posed by not having it pasteurized.

      • whiteness

You are such a gigantic shill. not one person has ever died from raw milk.

    • Rico Millan

I urge YOU to stop listening to Harvard scientists.

    • whiteness

I can attest to the validity of this story. I used to drink a half gallon of milk a day for years. I stopped drinking it and within weeks my joints stopped hurting, i’ve lost 25 pounds, and i can sleep through the night without waking up, unable to breathe.

Today’s processed milk clogs the circulatory system and is not as nutritious as they would have you believe. I have circulatory problems and am curing myself after decades of daily skim milk drinking by cutting it out and cheezes also.

    • RMS

This is all good, and all the comments below have true merit, but the fact is,
homogenized milk, produced from dairy companies, is poisoning us.

Factory produced milk, with all it’s antibiotics and other added hormones, contains mass amounts of “puss”, which is a by-product of the unsanitary conditions in which dairy cattle are kept in.
Organic, range-fed dairy cattle, have no “puss”, antibiotics, or hormones in their milk.

Yet, at the same time, farmers who produce organic, non-pasteurized milk, are being prosecuted by the U.S. gov. Why?

      Just saying/asking.

    • BigRed

I’m not convinced of this at all.

If anything, we should avoid foods with estrogen –

Ever wonder why Elmer’s Glue has a cow on the lablel? It’s because the main ingredient in milk is caseine. The same caseine that makes the glue that bonds wood together. Yum….
