Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy: Swedish Massage Work Using The Feet (Video).

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As a student in massage therapy I’m extremely grateful for the different paths you can take after learning massage. After learning the basics of massage you can branch out into many different paths such as; Pet Massage, Ayurvedic Massage, and Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. If you thought standing on someones back for massage is bad? Think again.

Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy was developed in 1995 by massage therapist Ruthie Hardee. Ashiatsu comes from the Japanese words ashi (foot) and atsu (pressure), and is an ancient form of bodywork associated with traditional shiatsu and some dynamics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

There are distinct differences between Ashiatsu and Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. Clients lie on massage tables, while practitioners perform Swedish massage with their feet by utilizing two overhead stationary bars to maintain balance and control.

Because therapists can also perform deep-tissue work using Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, this technique can help extend a therapist’s career by alleviating hand and extremity pain associated with performing more demanding forms of bodywork  (Massage Today).

The therapist basically hold on to two large bars above them and uses the weight of their body to help massage with their feet. It’s pretty neat!

Stay groovy and take care of those tootsies! :)

      Hi Radical Rose!

I’m Carol, the massage therapist pictured doing Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy (AOBT) in the photo with the flowered painting in the background. AOBT is a FABULOUS massage modality that offers relief for back pain as well as stress to a wide variety of clients—when expertly delivered by well-trained therapists.

The photo is copyrighted, but I am thrilled for you to publish it here, provided you:

      • include the distinction between AOBT and the technique in the video. AOBT is a style of massage therapy that requires rigorous, in-person training, which helps to ensure that this work is delivered safely.
      • include my contact info – http://www.ashiatsubycarol.com

I’m SO grateful for AOBT! It has extended my career and allowed me to help people I otherwise would not have been able to help. Go to http://www.deepfeet.com for training information or http://www.deepfeet.com/therapists.htm to find a qualified therapist in your area.
