Study Suggests New HIV Medication Protects Against Herpes

Study suggests new HIV medication may also protect against the herpes virus. This new discovery was a result of a trial which included participants who took the new HIV medication tenofovir in order to prevent HIV infection. Tenofovir is a medication which has been shown to lower the risk of HIV contraction by 75 percent. After further investigation the drug also proved to reduce the risk of herpes contraction. The results of the new study are published in the July 1 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The added advantage of the medication is believed to be beneficial for couples where only of the partners has HIV. The study was conducted by Connie Celum, M.D., M.P.H., from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her colleagues.
