Coconuts - The Silent Killer?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Are Coconuts Healthy?

The Coconut, the seed of a palm tree that grown mainly in tropical coastal areas, yields numerous food and nonfood products. The oil is used in vegetable shortening, nondairy creamers, some spreads and commercial baked goods. The creamy coconut meat that lines the interior of the nut’s hard outer shell is used both raw or dried as a baking product. Coconut milk, the sweet white fluid from the heart of the nut, is served as a beverage or used as a marinade.

Although all parts of the coconut have been used for thousands of years as a staple diet in many parts of the world, it is only recently that coconut products have been touted as super healthy foods. But is this true?

Should you eat coconut as part of a healthy diet?

Coconut Meat:

Dried coconut meat is rich in oil. In fact, more than 30g of saturated fat can be found in only 100g of coconut meat and a whopping 354 calories. Aside from the high saturated fat content, dried coconut is rich in fiber, vitamins E, B1, B3, B5 and B6 and the minerals including iron, selenium and magnesium.

Coconut Milk:

Coconut milk is extracted from coconut meat and contains virtually the same fat and nutrient profile. Coconut milk is often used as a milk substitute in products such as ice cream, yogurt and milk. If you are trying to lose weight coconut meat and coconut milk should be consumed in moderation.

Coconut Water:

Inside the center of young green coconuts is a clear liquid is known as coconut water. Recently coconut water has been marketed as a natural health drink due to its high potassium and magnesium content and its low level of fat.

Not only does coconut water have high potassium levels, it also contains antioxidants which prevent free radical damage that can contribute to cancer and cardiovascular decease. Antioxidants can help reverse previous damage and delay the aging process.

Coconut oil:

Coconut oil is a much debated topic in the medical industry. Due to its high saturated fat content, most health care providers warn against consuming coconut oil because saturated fats have been associated with heart disease. Coconut oil is abundant in lauric acid, a type of saturated fatty acid that does raise cholesterol levels; but it also increases HDL, the healthy type of cholesterol that you want to be high. You do need some fat in your diet to be healthy, and coconut oil is an all natural form of oil that contains vitamins and minerals as apposed to processed oils that can have hidden processing chemicals and pesticide residue.

The type of coconut product that you will invariability work into your diet should depend on what your health goals are. If you are a vegan with low cholesterol and you need fat in your diet you can incorporate all types of coconut into your meals. On the other hand, if losing weight is your main goal; coconut water and light varieties of coconut milk may be a better choice for your lifestyle.

Even the medical industry now admits that saturated fats not associated with cardiovascular disease.

    • Laughing Bird

Human beings have thrived on natural fats for thousands of years without any evidence of heart disease or cancer. It’s the hydrogenated fats found in processed foods that are problematic. This article is simply parroting the fat/heart-disease that countless studies have disproved.

    • Don Quixote

In southeast Asia where they’ve consumed coconuts for thousands of years heart disease was nearly unheard of – until western food showed up. High consumption of simple carbs causes disease and death.

    • StraightDopes

absolutely LOVING the comments above from Paul, Laughing, and Don.

      spot. on. guys.

the so-called “lipid hypothesis” is, at this point, pretty much discredited and moribund. moreover, MANY very important systems in the human body are DEPENDENT of such fats – the brain and nervous system not least among them!

“fat” does NOT make you “fat” – at least, not the right types of NATURAL fats, and so-called “low-fat” foods are among some of the worst foods you can possibly eat.

by the way, on a vegan-related note, the ostensibly vegan author of this article might be interested in knowing that every cell in the human body requires cholesterol, and cholesterol – solely an ANIMAL product – is a sort of “master hormone” in the human body. exogenous cholesterol gets metabolized into pregnenalone, which is then used by the body to create many, many other hormones. the human body is capable of producing cholesterol, but not at all in the amounts it needs to be producing. and high blood cholesterol – hypercholesterolemia – is simply an indication that the body is being stressed, and cholesterol is being used by the body in an attempt to correct what’s ailing it. in other words, if your cholesterol is very high, look to what’s causing the high cholesterol, rather than poisoning the body’s ability to create cholesterol.

      …and coconuts are AWESOME.

    • Arte Vespule

The only way for coconuts to be “silent killers” is if they fall out of the tree and hit you in the head. Though in the case of the author of this tripe, it would simply bounce off his thick skull….

      • ecclesiatical

Even if it falls from a tree it still isn’t a silent killer cause it makes that thud noise when hitting you on the head .
Misleading title to achieve more hits for the veg.

I fried a chicken burger in coconut oil once. Tasted amazing and the house smelled like a million bucks.

Coconut oil is the best thing that ever happened to me! About 6 months ago I read an article about the benefits of oil swishing. I began swishing with extra virgin coconut oil for about 20 minutes every day in the morning. Any edible oil will work but I like the taste of coconut. I have a periodontal disease that required flap surgery every few years so I thought I would try swishing to see if it would help.

After a couple weeks I began noticing little black specks coming from my mouth. After a month or so my gums stopped bleeding. That was huge because they would bleed every time I flossed.(Sorry about the graphic description but I’m really excited about this).

A couple weeks ago I went to get my teeth cleaned. I had no plaque at all! My (incurable) gum disease is healing!
      This is NOT BS! :)

My dentist’s reaction was strange. He is normally really a nice guy. He looked at my gums and teeth and walked away without saying anything. He’s been my dentist for 25 years. You would think he would be happy…

      • Don Quixote

No he wouldn’t be happy because you were money in the bank until now. Change your dentist to one with the mindset of a healer.

      • StraightDopes

        Eagles fan:

“oi swishing” (or “oil pulling”) is indeed an awesome practice that can help with a vast array of illnesses and conditions – some of which would not be readily apparent, as they don’t directly involve the mouth. you can even resolve some (though certainly not all) oral abscesses with it! and coconut oil might be the very best oil to use for that purpose (sesame oil is pretty good, too). it’s great to hear you’ve had success with this practice!

and it’s not at all strange that your dentist would seem less than enthused about your success – Don Quixote is right. after all, he will be losing money!

i’d encourage anyone reading this to take a look at oil pulling. it really does work wonders.

      • ecclesiatical

Your dentist was treating the symptom not the cause, that’s how they all work, because if they treat the cause you only go to them once.
I suffered from gingivitis for a couple of years ,than i read somewhere that vitamin c clears it in a couple of weeks and it did, neither may doctor was happy about it.

        • StraightDopes

ecclesiaical – that’s another favorite topic of mine – vitamin C and its many, many uses. the “primal panacea,” as Dr. Thomas Levy refers to it. indeed, i’m sure you noticed that one of the symptoms of scurvy is bleeding gums! if your diet is sufficiently high in vitamin C, and yet you had these symptoms nonetheless until you started taking supplementary vitamin C, you may want to look into any possible sources of excess free radicals either in your diet or in any habits/environmental exposure. my reasoning is that the body will be using much of your ascorbate stores to donate electrons to other molecules lacking electrons, thus quenching the free radicals but depleting your ascorbate levels in the process, making you hypoascorbemic. smoking comes to mind as one of those possible habits, or excess EMF fields or something. medications can do this, as well, as the body will use ascorbate to neutralize what it rightfully sees as a toxin that does not belong in the body.

sorry to rant on this and go off topic, but it’s something to consider.

    • Puffin

Try some coconut milk in coconut sugar and top it with a poached egg!

    • Don Quixote

I believe when you’re consuming enough saturated fats like coconut oil and butter it sends a signal to your body that you’re living in abundance and it doesn’t need to store calories as body fat, so it doesn’t.

    • an argie

Cholestortol and saturated fats are the biggest marketing cows in the pharmaceutical industry

Saying HDL cholestorol is good and LDL cholectorol is bad is the same as saying water into the sink is bad and water out of the tap is good. It’s a SYSTEM controlled by the liver!

If this is out of balance, it’s indicating something else is wrong. Don’t blame it on the “water”

Have you ever studied how they came to this conclusion? It’s total rubbish.

My girlfriend was in a wheelchair at a young age with an autoimmune disorder and arthritis. After years of severe pain she did the research, changed her diet and started only using coconut oil for cooking. She wont dare take vaccines and eat processed foods. She almost always eats non gmo/organic foods and at the age of 40 she has more energy and vigor than a 20 year old. She grew up as fat and now she’s slender. She consistently eats young coconuts in her diet so I wouldn’t worry about getting fat from them.

    • CrowPie

I use coconut oil for nearly every thing. I have a tub in the kitchen for cooking, one in the bath for things like hair conditioning, and skin……and one just for my lips.
