You Can Turn A $2000 Shipping Container Into An Epic Off-Grid Home
by Joe Martino
What if you could spend a fraction of what it would cost to buy or build your own house and instead build a unique home that you could make completely off grid? It can be done and there’s a bunch of people who’ve done it already.
Shipping containers exist in a massive surplus and someone like you or I can grab one for around $2000. From there, you can get your creative juices flowing and build an awesome home, get away or cottage like structure on your existing property providing you have the space. If you’re able to put this baby on wheels, you won’t even need any form of permit to have it around.
Innovative ideas like this are getting popular as people seek alternate ways to like modern lifestyles. There is even a site called Zigloo who has released multiple plans and ideas for making structures out of shipping containers and more. You can check them out here.
Other Off-Grid Ideas
Other off grid ideas and projects that are becoming popular are things like tiny homes and earthships. Both ideas are gaining a lot of traction lately and can be built in very modern designs so it doesn’t feel like you are heading back to the stone ages. You can check out more about Earthships here and Tiny Homes here.
Below are some awesome pictures of various shipping container projects that were done by others.

Great story and great photos. Keep in mind, the best containers are “one-trip” and they run about $4K delivered. Made from Corten steel, they are built to survive sea shipping, so they don’t rust as easily. These homes have all had quite a bit of work done and that’s not cheap, unless you provide the labor yourself. Still, in a pinch you could put bunk beds in a 20 foot container. Be sure to cover the wooden flooring, it’s treated with some nasty chemicals to keep the bugs away.
For $2K, plus delivery, you could just buy standard building materials and make pretty much the same thing. To make these livable, you still have to fur out the insides and put in all of the insulation, wiring, wallboard, etc. You cant bury them without reinforcing them because the sides will come in. All of the vertical strength is at the corners.
So, unless you are just eco-minded and like the idea of reusing something (these don’t really go to waste – they are recyclable) your best bet is to use wood to start with.
Cool
I am VERY impressed! This shows a lot of ingenuity and imagination…
And they don’t burn!
they look great!
look great
I’d like to get a container and chuck Obama in it and send it out in the ocean. Well be nice and give him a golf club.
I have been a builder for 30 years…These containers are Great for one thing; SHIPPING STUFF ON BOATS , TRAINS OR TRUCKS…The materials to create the same footprint ( approx 8X40 or 320 square feet ) cost less than 2000 and they’re ready to accept finishes…The interiors and exterior finishes as well as trades installations kill you…Then; you have the logistics of delivery, on and on and on…If you need a great storage shed on your property; Great! House…? Not a good idea.
they look crap… No good isolation. so summers it is hot and winter extra cold. Rain hitting on a container at night must be awful since it makes a lot of sound. Not to mention that you won’t want to live where hurricanes or tonado’s are a possibility. it will be blown over instantly.
