Many Bone Fractures Preventable, Says Lufkin Orthopedic Specialist

Lufkin, TX – For Immediate Release – As part of the aging process, bone mass and density decreases, making mature adults more susceptible to bone fractures from falls. As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Direct Orthopedic Care in Lufkin, Dr. Merritt Pember says that there are steps you can take to help slow bone loss and reduce your risk of a broken hand, broken foot, or other fracture.

“Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is the best way to build strong bones, especially in childhood. Studies have shown that adults who have instilled healthy habits before the age of 30 that encourage bone health are less likely to experience bone diseases such as osteoporosis in the future,” stated Dr. Pember.

So what constitutes a healthy lifestyle? For starters, Dr. Pember recommends daily exercise for at least 20 minutes. The exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous, but should work the body against gravity to support bone health. Exercises such as hiking, stair climbing, or even walking are beneficial.

Proper nutrition is also essential in that it provides vitamins and minerals necessary for retaining bone mass including vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphorus. Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean protein should be consumed and processed foods drastically reduced.

Dr. Pember added, “If you are a smoker, especially if you are female, you should quit immediately. Smoking interferes with calcium absorption in the bones as well as lowers estrogen levels, which is associated with accelerated bone loss.”

“If you suspect a bone fracture after a sports injury, fall, or other trauma, treatment should be sought immediately. Direct care facilities offer extended hours with access to an orthopedic specialist without a referral,” noted Dr. Pember.
