UK About to Legalize Cannabis? Parliament Decides This Week

Last year, a UK mom illegally gave her son cannabis after doctors told them the boy had three days to live – he made a full recovery and lives today. Another UK woman cured her deadly brain tumor using oil made from cannabis after chemo failed, but her cure remains illegal. And only recently, the first UK person ever was prescribed cannabis oil containing THC, to reverse potentially fatal epilepsy. While all three stories are truly amazing, it is only the third one in which the patient was allowed the use of a minute amount of cannabis…and just barely.

Stories like these are inspiring the people of the UK to speak out for the right to use medical marijuana, and so have high-profile figures like Sting, Russell Brand and Sir Richard Branson. The issue is reaching the ears of Parliament this week.

The UK parliament will debate a proposal to partially legalize cannabis this week, as campaigns in favor of using the drug for medicinal purposes gather momentum.

On Friday, politicians will revisit the issue in the first debate over the introduction of a right for sick people to use the cannabinoid drugs.

The second reading of the Legalisation of Cannabis (Medicinal Purposes) Bill will take place after it first appeared before MPs in October 2017. The bill proposes to “allow the production, supply, possession and use of cannabis and cannabis resin for medicinal purposes; and for connected purposes.”

Cases of people treating illnesses with the class-B drug have prompted a wave of support for legalizing cannabis in the UK. One case that stunned medical minds was that of a six-year-old British boy who suffered from a rare form of epilepsy. The child was taken to the Netherlands by his parents, where he was administered with the drug.

He went from 30 seizures a day to going fit-free for 24 days, his parents said. His mother stressed that the dosage was minimal. Just three drops of cannabis oil were enough to help her son significantly reduce epileptic seizures.

This boy, by the way, was just denied his medical treatment today. No doubt, this will further stoke the calls for legalization.

RT alleges that the UK police are often “turning a blind eye” and choosing not to charge offenders caught with small amounts of marijuana, unlike in the U.S. However, a marijuana possession charge could garner a max of five years’ prison time in the UK and unlimited fines. Australia, Puerto Rico, Poland, Czech Republic, Canada and Macedonia are finally making allowances for medical marijuana while cultivation is allowed in Turkey for medical purposes.

Research is starting to support the idea of cannabis and psychedelic substance research and is emphasizing the seriously damaging effects of alcohol. If public health is truly the reason for a cannabis ban, than why are cigarettes and alcohol perfectly legal and available for purchase?

Baroness Meacher leads the charge for legalization and demonstrates that fears of “reefer madness” have been greatly exaggerated.
