Garlic (Allium sativum) may have a potential effect in prevention and treatment of cancers by gobbling up cancer cells before they can proliferate to  invasive tumor, some studies suggested.

Cancers, is a class of chronic diseases characterized by uncontrollable cells growth in tissue in the body.

At the later stage,  the cancerous cells can infect other health cells and tissue far away from the original site by travelling through blood and lymph.

The diseases are the second cause of death in US.

According to statistic, between 2011-2015, by the national cancer Institute, 440 per 100,000 adults are diagnosed with cancers, inducing 163.5 per 100,000 death

Depending to types of cancer, patients may experience certain general and specific symptoms.

DNA alternation caused by inherited gene mutation in induction abnormal cells proliferation, is the major cause of cancers.

The National Cancer Institute suggested that age, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet and life style, smoking, radiation, viruses, carcinogens, obesity,… and chronic inflammation,  are also considered as some major risk factors that can cause cancers. (As these factors are accumulated through many studies in which all point to a similar association between a potential risk factor and an increased risk of cancer).

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belongings to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. 

The pungent herb has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine as a natural antibiotic and for treatment of common cold, flu, blood pressure and cholesterol levels,….. and

Garlic appears to be generally safe although some people may suffer mild allergic reactions.

Recent study lead by author Dr. Oommen S, indicated that allicin, the main ingredient found in garlic induces the formation of apoptotic bodies, nuclear condensation and a typical DNA ladder in cancer cells, causing cell death.

In the study of the efficay of ingredient allicin isolated from garlic also showed that the phytochemical is capable in inducing an increase of the rate of apoptosis by obstructing the expression the cell cycle division and  pro inflammation.

On cancer HL60 and U937 cell lines, allicin inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway by involving the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway through oromoted GSH depletion and changes in the intracellular redox status.

Furthermre, in differentiation of the function of 20 compounds from garlic, researchers at the Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala, suggested that garlic phytocompounds possess anticancer activity by specifically targeting cancer biomarkers.

Other compounds found in garlic such as organosulfur also suppressed cancer cells proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest.

Therefore, people who are at higher risk of the diseases may consider to add portions of garlic whole food igarlic nto their diet for preventive measure.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of garlic anti cancer possibilities.
