The avocado is botanically a large berry that contains a single large seed. The fruit grows on the avocado tree and is also known as the avocado pear or alligator pear. The avocado tree is thought to have originated in South Central Mexico but today is grown in tropical and Mediterranean climates around the world.
According to Natural News,
There are two main varieties of avocado, the Hass (from California) and the Florida variety. The Hass is the darker one with the rougher, pebbly skin, while the Florida avocado is larger and has a smooth, lighter green skin. Both are healthy — so it’s really just your personal preference as to which kind you indulge in.
Many people have reservations about buying avocados because they aren’t sure how to pick a good one. A ripe avocado will not have indentations in the skin and will feel slightly soft when you press it firmly. An overly ripe avocado will have dents in the skin an feel squishy when you squeeze it.
Benefits - It is true that avocados are high in fat, but they contain the ‘good’ Omega 3 fat that you want in your diet. Avocados help HDL cholesterol levels (‘good’ cholesterol) and lower LDL levels (‘bad’ cholesterol). HDL also regulates triglyceride levels which can helps prevent diabetes. Good fats benefit heart health, contrary to what many have been led to believe through the marketing of low fat products. (See also Coconut Oil.)
Avocados can help with weight loss, reduce appetite, and contain healthy fiber to keep you regular. The green fruit is also anti-inflammatory. They contain all 18 essential amino acids necessary for the body to form a complete protein plus avocado protein is easy to digest. They have Vitamins A, C and E, as well as selenium and zinc. Finally avocado consumption promotes a healthy immune system and reproductive system.
Ways to enjoy – The most obvious way to enjoy avocados is as they are. Just slice them up and enjoy. If you want to spice things up a bit you can add sea salt, fresh cracked pepper, paprika or cayenne and squeeze on some fresh lemon or lime juice.
To get more creative, try baking an egg inside half of an avocado.
Or the next time you make chicken, tuna or egg salad, try using pureed avocado as the binder instead of mayonnaise.
You can also grill it! That’s right, simply brush each half with lemon juice and olive oil and grill for 2-3 minutes.
Then of course there’s avocado toast, avocado fries and guacamole. Avocado is great for soups, salads and smoothies as well. You can even use avocados to create delicious desserts like cakes, brownies or mousse – replace butter with avocado to significantly reduce the calories. The possibilities are almost limitless.
