Coronavirus/COVID-19 in the US: Drive-Through Testing Begins in Colorado (Video)

Colorado is one of seven states which is using the drive-through site program to test individuals who meet the current coronavirus/COVID-19 testing criteria. The other states include California, Connecticut, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Washington.

Patients seeking to be tested at a drive-through site must bring a doctor’s order (written or electronic) confirming they meet the current testing criteria and a photo ID. Healthcare workers in personal protective gear take a driver’s temperature, check for breathing difficulties and swab the passenger to get a sample which the healthcare worker sends to the state laboratory. The testing is free.

One of the first programs of its kind in the nation, the drive-through site here in the Denver area opened on Wednesday, 11 March 2020, and has already provided testing for more than 650 people. By the following day, the wait time of cars of individuals waiting to be tested had increased to four hours, forcing the health department to step in and cut off the day’s testing. Testing resumed on Saturday, 14 March 2020, at a new city location, the lines of waiting vehicles long once again.

While much will depend on how many individual tests are completed daily, each individual tested should expect to be contacted directly with their testing results within 72 hours, and is advised to self-quarantine at home during the wait period, isolating themselves from other individuals and public spaces.

Individuals positive for coronavirus/COVID-19 and not requiring hospitalization, will be issued by the Denver Department of Public Health an isolation order which states the infected individual must self-quarantine themselves at home for a 14-day period. If there are other individuals in the home, children and/or adults, they must also isolate themselves for the same 14-day period. The Denver Department of Public Health representative for each confirmed case will probably ask additional questions relating to the patient’s movements so others can be tested.

Also on Thursday, the eligibility criteria for COVID-19 testing in Colorado was updated. Individuals who do not meet one or more of the listed criteria will not be eligible for the free testing.

–Any person, including health care workers, who has had close contact with a lab-confirm COVID-19 patient within 14 days of the onset of symptoms and has a fever or shows symptoms of a lower respiratory illness

–Any person with a history of travel to areas with ongoing community transmission (domestic or international) within 14 days of the onset of symptoms and has a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness that doesn’t have an alternative explanation, such as influenza.

–Any person who is hospitalized and has a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness without an alternative explanation, such as influenza.

–Any person who lives in a residential facility, like a nursing home, who has a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness without an alternative explanation, such as influenza.

–Any healthcare worker, clinical lab worker or first responder who has new symptoms of the virus within 14 days of having direct contact with patients with symptoms of respiratory illness, or with those people’s clinical specimens. They must also have a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness without an alternative explanation, such as influenza.

–Any person who is at risk of severe illness due to COVID-19, including adults aged 65+, and people with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, receiving immunosuppressive medications, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease) who also has a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness without an alternative explanation, such as influenza.

–Outbreaks or clusters of respiratory illness. Any person who is a member of a group with multiple symptomatic individuals that is being investigated by public health officials who also has a fever or signs symptoms of lower respiratory illness.

Provisions were also listed for individuals without health insurance, who do not want to pay out-of-pocket for a visit to a doctor’s office in order to obtain the required note. These individuals can go to the state laboratory where they will be directed to an on-site nurse or epidemiologist in the state lab testing center for assessment of their eligibility based on the stated criteria. Another option for individuals without health insurance is to talk with health care providers, who may refer them to a federal resource center for testing.

For undocumented individuals who meet one or more of the stated eligibility criteria can get tested using any photo ID at the state facility – the ID does not need to be issued by the government.

Below is a video from a Colorado resident who tested positive for coronavirus/COVID-19. Lisa Merck shares the progression of her infection, the self-steps she used as her symptoms intensified and how she still contracted coronavirus/COVID-19 without meeting any of the Denver Department of Public Health eligibility criteria, which caused a delay in diagnosis and treatment.
