How to Stay Sane During COVID-19

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Stay-at-home orders are slowly lifting across the nation, but COVID-19 is unfortunately here to stay—for now. At least until scientists come up with a vaccine. In the meantime, it’s all about learning to adjust to the world’s ever-changing “new normal.” We all know what they say about looking forward to a light at the end of the tunnel, but don’t forget to seek light along the way as well. There’s plenty if you know where to look.

Here are our tips for finding, and sometimes creating, those little bits of light to get you through.

Stop Engaging With Online Trolls

The infuriating opinions you constantly see on social media and in news story comments are not worth your energy. Stop looking, and definitely stop replying. You’re not going to change an angry stranger’s mind by having a squabble in a Facebook thread.

Instead, focus on what you can control; yourself! Take a deep breath and log off.

Spend Time Outside

Ah, nature. The ultimate healer. Science backs the idea that spending time outside can brighten your mood by lowering the stress hormone cortisol. Besides that, surrounding yourself with natural light is therapeutic and has immediate positive effects on stress, blood pressure and the immune system. Exercising outdoors is even better.

Aim to spend at least 20 minutes outdoors daily.

Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Help

Look, it’s been months and we’re still not sure when this pandemic will end. You’re not alone in your struggles, and there is absolutely no shame in seeking help. Whether it’s an understanding and supportive friend or a professional therapist, reach out if you think you could benefit from talking with someone.

Phone counseling is one option to consider if you’re not comfortable leaving the house, or if your local therapy practice is still closed for in-person sessions. BetterHelp has a good article discussing the pros and cons of phone counseling/therapy if you’d like more information.

With all this said, the big takeaway is to focus solely on things within your control. And be easy on yourself. You’re doing the best you can, and you will be okay.
