Cannabis Hand Sanitizers Appearing on the Market
If there is one thing with which we have all become all too familiar over recent months, it is hand sanitizer. Once seen only at the entrances to hospital wards and in the dark recesses of grandmothers’ handbags, those pump dispensers are now ubiquitous. This is exactly the sort of shift that is spotted by those who maintain that every crisis contains the seeds of opportunity. As a result, more and more new types of hand sanitizer are appearing on the market to meet growing demand.
It should come as little surprise to see that an increasingly common ingredient is CBD. Derived from the cannabis plant, CBD oil has been the hottest news on the herbal remedies front over the past year or so. Its
claimed medicinal benefits have been discussed at length. But should you be using it to clean your hands?
About CBD
Before we dive into that question, it is worth reminding ourselves what CBD is, and what it is not. As a cannabinoid, meaning a compound that comes from the cannabis plant, it is surrounded by misconceptions. CBD is not psychotropic, so it does not get you high like the
weed and edibles that are becoming legal in a growing number of states. These contain a different cannabinoid called THC.
CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant, which by definition is cannabis with a THC content of less than 0.3 percent. There is, therefore, no risk of psychoactive effects and no question over legality as far as CBD is concerned.
Anti-Bacterial and More
In
a 2008 study by the Journal of Natural Products, it was reported that cannabinoids had been shown to be effective in stemming bacterial growth. Further, more recent, studies suggest that it does this by
breaking down the membranes of the bacteria. In fact, they concluded that it is as potent as the most common antibiotics.
This naturally makes CBD a compelling choice as an ingredient in hand sanitizers. However, the benefits do not end there. Most sanitizers contain significant amounts of alcohol, which can leave the skin dry and chapped. CBD nourishes, hydrates and regulates the skin’s oil production. This is why it is already so commonly used in skin creams and other beauty products.
Are There Any Risks?
If you have sensitive skin and have never used CBD before, always try a small amount first and wait to see if there is any adverse reaction, just as you would when using any skin product for the first time. Aside from that, however, there are no specific side effects of using CBD on the skin.
Perhaps the biggest risk is in falling for the hype and expecting too much from CBD. While the research indicates definite benefits, studies are ongoing and there is still much to learn. A CBD sanitizer will contain a blend of ingredients alongside the CBD to provide optimum results. Do not expect to achieve the same level of protection by just rubbing neat CBD oil into the skin.
