With the coronavirus wreaking havoc globally, one of the groups suffering the most is cancer patients; especially those with mesothelioma. The Need for Late-Stage Mesothelioma Therapy

This means that the disease did not spread into other organs since the treatment process started.

The same report claimed that the 20 patients who received the experimental drug and chemotherapy showed better benefits for patients with the late-stage disease than those in the early-stage who only had chemotherapy.

What does this mean for patients with late-stage malignant mesothelioma? ONCOS-102 might be the very treatment that they are waiting for. The medication helps in strengthening the immune system of the patients to help fight off the disease.

ONCOS-102: The Promising Drug for Malignant Mesothelioma

ONCOS-102 contains an adenovirus with immune-boosting properties. So essentially, ONCOS-102 is a combination therapy that puts together the power of virotherapy and immunotherapy. It is rich in cytokines, the proteins that activate the immune system to get working, and begin looking for the affected cells. The treatment would then target cancer cells by replicating and breaking up the cells. As soon as the proteins are released, they would send a signal to the body’s immune system that a tumor is present that they should act on.

Once the adenovirus detects the tumor, it would inject itself into the cancer site. This is where the ONCOS-102 makes copies of itself and breaks the cancer cells so that they no longer have a chance to spread further.

Why does the ONCOS-102 show great promise? Because the adenovirus would specifically target only mesothelioma cells.

However, it looks like the patients who would greatly benefit from the treatment will have to wait for a while. The threat of the coronavirus has caused mesothelioma research and conferences to be postponed until further notice. However, they should delight themselves in the idea that there may be a treatment that they will be able to rely on to help them deal with their disease.
