What you Need to Know About the Symptoms and Causes of Cancer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Sometimes, cancer has no specific symptoms. That is why individuals must take steps to limit their risk factors and schedule the proper cancer screening. Most cancer screening is unique to particular age groups, and a person’s primary care doctor will know what screening is necessary to perform based on a person’s age.

Several issues can lead to cancer, and there are many different types, from bladder and stomach cancer to cancers caused by medications such as Zantac. Regardless of the type of cancer, there are some general warning signs to watch for. If these signs are seen, seeking care from a doctor is highly recommended.

Blood Tinged Saliva or a Persistent Cough

Usually, these symptoms are caused by an infection like sinusitis or bronchitis. They may also be a symptom of cancer of the head, neck, or the lungs. If someone is dealing with an ongoing cough that lasts over a month, or if there is blood in the mucus being coughed up, they should schedule an appointment with a doctor right away.

Changes in Bowel Habits

Usually, changes in bowel habits will be related to a person’s diet and the amount of fluid they consume. Sometimes, though, doctors will see pencil-thin stools in someone who has colon cancer. Sometimes, cancer can also exhibit ongoing diarrhea.

Some people with cancer may feel like they need to have a bowel movement but still feel that way after they have had a bowel movement. If any type of abnormal bowel complaint lasts for more than a few days, a professional evaluation is needed. This is because significant changes that are not easily explained by changes in a person’s diet can be cancer related and should be evaluated.

Blood Present in the Stool

Anytime someone notices blood in their stool, they should have a doctor evaluate the problem. Sometimes, hemorrhoids can cause cases of rectal bleeding but, since hemorrhoids are common, they may exist along with cancer. This means that, even if someone is dealing with hemorrhoids, they need to have a doctor examine their whole intestinal tract if there is blood in their stool.

For some people, X-rays may be enough to make a diagnosis. However, usually, a colonoscopy will be needed. It is best to have a colonoscopy regularly once a person reaches the age of 50.

Anemia (Low Blood Count)

This is a condition where people have fewer than the necessary number of red blood cells present in their blood. Cases of anemia should be looked into. There are several types of anemia, but blood loss is usually caused by iron deficiency anemia. Unless there is an apparent reason for this ongoing blood loss, anemia needs an explanation.

Several cancers can cause anemia; however, bowel cancers are responsible for most cases of iron-deficiency anemia. Evaluations should include the use of X-rays or endoscopy.

Getting checked Out for Cancer

Cancer is serious. It does not matter what kind of cancer a person is dealing with, they need to seek help from their doctor to help ensure the proper treatment is provided. Being informed and knowing what to look for are the best ways to ensure that proper cancer treatment is provided. Keep the information here in mind to know what symptoms to watch for.
