How Is CBD Oil Made?

Through years of civilization and technological advancement, the Cannabis plant has served mankind for its medical, therapeutic, ritual and recreational purposes. Cannabis plants are among the most cultivated plants that were an excellent source of fiber and grain for a variety of products which you probably didn’t know came from this plant, including paper, rope, concrete, and even fuel.

The Cannabis Industry

Because of its popularity, the cannabis industry is coined as a multi-billion industry valued at USD$12 billion in 2018 and continues to expand globally. Despite the numerous uses of cannabis in different fields and industries, many people remain uneducated about this rich industry. When people hear about cannabis, they typically associate it with ‘being high,’ but it’s only a part of the bigger picture.

In order to understand the cannabis industry, it’s definitely worth looking into CBD. If you’re planning to purchase CBD products, check out Tommy Chong’s CBD. But, in this article, you’ll get to explore how CBD oils and other products are made.

What Is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is an active ingredient found in Cannabis species, particularly Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. It’s the second most abundant phytocannabinoid from the plant followed by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is another phytocannabinoid that CBD is always compared to.

Marijuana is a fruit of cannabis. There’s no question that marijuana can make an individual feel ecstatic after consumption. However, take note that CBD isn’t the one responsible for creating these euphoric effects, but it’s the THC. CBD, on another end, is a non-psychoactive and non-intoxicating compound in the Cannabis plant, making it an excellent candidate for health-related products.

What Is CBD Oil?

Essentially, CBD oil is an oil product that contains a large percentage of CBD. Since the CBD compound is contained in the Cannabis plants, along with other essential cannabinoids and compounds, product manufacturers have to isolate CBD through extraction, which will be elaborated in the next part.

Depending on their CBD strength, concentration, and other ingredients, CBD oils exist in three main categories:

  • Full-Spectrum CBD: As its name implies, full-spectrum CBD oils have a complete cannabinoid profile, including CBD, THC, and lesser-known phytocannabinoids, as well as other essential compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids. Consuming full-spectrum CBD causes the “entourage effect,” where you’ll feel enhanced health benefits of all ingredients as they work in harmony.
  • CBD Isolate: CBD isolates are literally CBD products that only have 99% CBD as the ingredient, and are stripped from any other matter and phytocannabinoids. CBD isolates are the best type of CBD oil for people who want to get started with CBD.
  • Broad-Spectrum CBD: The broad-spectrum CBD is the middle ground between full-spectrum CBD and CBD isolates. It contains everything that the full-spectrum has except the THC, making the product non-psychoactive. If you want to enjoy the benefits of CBD oils without making you high, broad-spectrum CBD is the best you can get.

How Is CBD Oil Made?

After harvesting the cannabis plant, the purity is examined if it contains THC levels of lower than 0.3% to ensure no intoxication and psychoactivity, as well as tested for batch consistency.

When CBD is extracted from the plant, they’re always submerged in carrier oils. This is because CBD is a fat-soluble compound that achieves maximum activity and effectiveness when diluted in fatty substances, such as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oils.

The main goal of manufacturers is to separate the CBD extract from the plant material without damaging its potency. Generally, they utilize the following methods of extraction:

  • Carrier Oil Extraction: The plant material is heated to activate its phytocannabinoids, then add it into a carrier oil. While it’s an effective extraction method without any risks of contamination, it results in low and inconsistent yields of CBD that aren’t ideal for mass production.
  • Steam Distillation: This process utilizes water that’s heated to turn it into steam, which then separates CBD from the plant material. Then, it’ll undergo distillation to obtain CBD oil from water. This setup is inexpensive and doesn’t leave any toxic residue, but it also results in inconsistent CBD concentration and can potentially damage CBD due to the uncontrolled heat generated during the process.
  • Solvent Extraction: In exchange for an expensive setup, this method is relatively more efficient than steam distillation. Here are the categories under solvent extraction:
  • Hydrocarbon solvent extraction uses hydrocarbons such as propane, butane, and petroleum. Although it has efficient and consistent results, the residues are potentially toxic.
  • Natural solvent extraction, alternatively, is safer as it uses natural solvents like ethanol. But they yield low CBD concentration and leaves chlorophyll that affects the product’s taste.
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extraction: Being the most effective extraction method, CO2 extraction uses a supercritical CO2 that exists in its liquid and gas state simultaneously. The supercritical CO2 and cannabis plant material is subjected to a series of pressurized chambers that leaves pure CBD oil extracts with CBD concentration as high as 92%. However, this extraction setup is very expensive.

Final Thoughts

In order to extract CBD with utmost quality and precision, cannabis plants undergo extensive processes.

After extracting CBD oil from these methods, it’s up to the manufacturers to filter CBD to remove impurities and boost its effectiveness, then put them into respective packaging to market as CBD oils. They can also incorporate these extracts to formulate a wide-spectrum of CBD-infused products available in the market today.

I also use CBD products and know that CBD oil has skyrocketed in recent years due to its purported calming effects. It can now be found in a variety of products, from simple oil infusions to potato chips with added CBD. I usually Buy CBD products on Aifory.com because a friend of mine has already ordered products there and I’m confident in the quality.
