We tried the vegan version of a ketogenic diet and this is what happened

Is it possible to eat keto on a vegan or plant-based diet? Well, we tried and this is exactly what happened. Know this: you need to plan ahead for any hope of success. Keto is such a popular way to lose weight that we wanted to see if it is possible to do keto on a plant-based diet and put your body in ketosis or fat-burning mode. Okay, we only tried it for one day, but this was enough to find that while it is doable, it is difficult to maintain as keeping carbs low on a plant-based diet requires you to know which ones are correct to eat. The goal was not to get into ketosis (which takes more than a day) or lose weight (also quite impossible in a single day) but to understand how difficult it is when eating plant-based or vegan to add another diet to our diet. plate – pun intended.

Your two contestants in this diet challenge are me, Hailey, and my friend, Caitie, who calls herself a “carb junkie.” We are spending the final days of quarantine together and trying as many diets as we can, just for fun. These foods are classified as Sirf Stand, because they supposedly activate the “skinny gene” in the body, through what are called sirtuins in food, but trust me, this diet is much more difficult than it sounds.

Vegan keto diets work because they tell the body to burn fat

The vegan keto foods diet is a hot topic right now, especially for those who want to lose weight quickly. Keto is a diet high in fat and protein, and low in carbohydrates (approximately 15 grams of net carbs per day). However, because Caitie and I are plant-based, we are eating a lot of vegetables and we needed to find those that are the lowest in carbs.

The hardest part about going keto on a plant-centric diet is that we would typically eat a lot of legumes like beans, lentils, chickpeas and all of these are too high in carbs to fit into the keto plan. Instead, we had to switch to high-fat foods like nuts, avocado, and meat alternatives like a vegetarian hot dog (although we generally try to stay away from processed foods). Also on the keto plan, there are all kinds of oils like avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and grapeseed oil. On a ketogenic diet, it’s critical to stay below 15 grams of net carbs per day, and by net carbs, what we mean is that you subtract the fiber content from your grams of carbs.

Combine plant-based Keto Plus plus intermittent fasting for the best weight loss results

First, we investigated what is the easiest way to master the plant-based ketogenic diet, and a key factor is combining it with intermittent fasting or eating for a specific period of time. We had our first meal at 2 pm. M. And we stop eating at 8 p.m. M., Which means that we had already fasted for 18 hours before our first bite.

The fasting process naturally allows the body to burn fat for fuel. During the fasting window, you burn off your glycogen stores and your insulin also decreases, so your body naturally turns to fat for fuel, according to Dr. Jason Fung, who wrote Life within the Fasting Lane. Adding this little diet hack to our day was a way to activate the ketogenic process before starting the diet.

To keep us busy during intermittent fasting, we first drank hot lemon water, then went for a morning walk, picked up bikes from the store, and went for a ride. Afterward, we spend more time preparing our kitchen to start the diet. We weren’t hungry and we got pretty distracted from eating.

Here are your essential foods to eat on a plant-based ketogenic diet:

Vegan keto meal for day one:

Our first meal was a cucumber salad with pickled cucumbers, green beans, and cipollini onions, mixed with apple cider vinegar and white with dill. And each of us had a vegetarian dog from Lightlife, which has only 5 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 14 grams of plant-based protein, we felt good and we both thought the vegetarian dog was delicious, it tasted better than the most of our dogs in quarantine. lunches. We liked keto dogs more than real ones.

Keto Vegan Food Snack:

Around 3:30 pm we began to get hungry again. This was the first time I felt like we were “starving” and needed snacks. We were taking a walk in the city and decided to return. When we return home, we feel tired and “burned out.” When we got home, we drank water, ate raspberries, blueberries, seaweed, and tried some coconut yogurt. At now, we had a complete of 12 grams of net carbs left for the day. In our minds, it actually meant 10 grams of net carbs because we were expecting an enriched seltzer with dinner, which has 2 grams of net carbs. This was just a numbers pool, and that we couldn’t help but wonder who wants to measure like this.
