(Natural NewsBone broth is a healing food that’s made with nutritious ingredients, but it can take several hours to make. A simple kitchen hack to enjoy the health benefits of bone broth without waiting for hours is using a pressure cooker.

Why is bone broth good for you?

Bone broth is cooked for several hours, which makes the bones demineralized. This releases the minerals into the broth, which provides many health benefits, such as minimizing inflammation, preventing illness and infection, and relieving the symptoms of leaky gut.

A bone broth made with land animals is full of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium while a broth made with fish bones is a great source of iodine.

Bone broth can boost digestive health because it’s full of glycine, an amino acid. Glycine promotes better digestion by increasing the production of stomach acid.

Glycine is an essential component of bile acid since the latter has a role in fat digestion in the small intestine. Bile acid also helps keep your blood cholesterol levels normal.

Bone broth also contains glutamine, a natural remedy for leaky gut syndrome. If you are suffering from this condition, the lining of your intestines aren’t working properly. The toxins that should stay your intestine then leak into your bloodstream, which can lead to various autoimmune issues. Bone broth is a natural remedy for the common cold and the flu. If you have a cold, have steaming bowl of bone broth with lots of pepper. The spices will help release watery fluids in your mouth, throat, and lungs. This thins out the respiratory mucus, making it easier to expel.

Don’t worry about waiting for hours for your bone broth to be ready. Using a pressure cooker can significantly cut down your prep time.

Homemade bone broth recipe

The recipe below comes from Megan Lavin’s cookbook titled “An Allergy Mom’s Lifesaving Instant Pot Cookbook.” Make this bone broth if you only have 45 minutes to spare.

To make a more nutritious bone broth, blend all the vegetables before incorporating them into the broth. The recipe below makes four to six servings.

Ingredients

  • 10 to 12 cups of water
  • Bones from a whole organic rotisserie chicken
  • 1 yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • celery ribs, roughly chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon (tsp) salt
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 bay leaves

Steps

  1. Place all the ingredients in a pressure cooker (e.g., an Instant Pot). It’s fine if some of the chicken bones are sticking out of the water, but the rest of the ingredients must be submerged. Don’t go over the maximum fill line of your pressure cooker.
  2. Close the lid, then move the valve to sealing. Set your pressure cooker to high pressure.
  3. Use manual mode and let the pressure cooker run for 45 minutes.
  4. When the timer is done, move the valve to venting. This will quickly release the pressure.
  5. Remove the bones and bay leaves.
  6. Use an immersion blender or high-quality blender, then carefully blend the vegetables and liquid. Work in batches to process the hot soup.

Consume the soup within two to three days. Freeze the leftovers for up to six months. The bone broth can be consumed plain or used as a base for savory soups.
