Stats issued by the Office of National Statistics: Year 2020 – 9,400 deaths. (7851 of which people were over 65 years old). Year 2021 – 7971 deaths (5746 of which were over 65 years old). The average age overall is 82. Also under the doctors’ guidelines for filling in death certificates it allows doctors to use their own judgement as to whether a patient died of covid. Guidance notes quote ‘if before death the patient had symptoms typical of COVID-19 infection, but the test result has not been received, it would be satisfactory to give ‘COVID-19’ as the cause of death, tick Box B and then share the test result when it becomes available. In the circumstances of there being no swab, it is satisfactory to apply clinical judgement.’ (info Office for National Statistics Guidance for doctors completing Medical Certificates of Cause of Death in England and Wales).
