When Dental Care Costs You a Fortune

When Dental Care Costs You a Fortune

The cost of dental care has increased steadily in the last decade, with the peak national annual dental expenditure reaching $145 billion in 2019. However, according to the American Dental Association, there was a slight decline of about 1.8% in 2020 due to COVID 19.

The expenditure is projected to continue increasing over the coming years. According to a study published on CMS.gov by the Office of the Actuary at the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, annual dental care spending is projected to skyrocket to $230 billion by 2030.

Higher Prices Do Not Guarantee Quality Service

Unfortunately, the increased cost has not guaranteed quality service, as evidenced by the numerous negative consumer reviews on review websites. Therefore, whether you want to go in for a routine checkup or get dental implants, it is recommended that patients check online reviews for the particular dental clinic before booking an appointment.

For example, if to look up reviews on websites like PissedConsumer.com, let’s say for Clear Choice reviews, you’ll find that the most common issues customers encounter include overbilling, poor customer service, poor denture work, high cost of dental services, unforeseen costs, medical negligence during and post-treatment, and false advertising.

To that matter, many online complaints also showcase that patients of dental clinics are being offered five-star service during a consultation to entice them to make a deposit. However, the quality of medical and customer service declined as soon as they made payment. Dental services at the clinic cost tens of thousands, yet in some cases, the patients walked out worse than they came in, or their dental health deteriorated post-treatment.

Why the High Cost?

Several factors contribute to the high cost of dental services. First, like other services and products, annual inflation contributes to higher prices of dental procedures. Secondly, dentistry is highly technical and requires many years of study and experience. Therefore, the most qualified and experienced dentists charge expensively for their expertise.

Another factor contributing to expensive dental treatments is the overall high cost of dental equipment and tools. Dental clinics also have to factor in their overhead costs such as supplies, tax, rent, staff salaries, electricity, insurance, and much more in their charges.

Furthermore, some patients lack oral hygiene and do not follow through with routine oral care. Therefore, they get major dental health issues or wait until it is too late to seek dental service, making treatment complex and expensive.

The exact cost of treatment varies from person to person, depending on their dental issues and the type of procedure required. According to the 2020 Precedence Research report, endodontic procedures were the most sought-after dental service, accounting for 29.7% of all dental procedures conducted in 2020.

The second most popular dental services were diagnostic and preventative services at 18.5%. They were followed by oral and maxillofacial surgery (14.8%), with a similar demand level as periodontal surgery (11.9%). Although cosmetic dentistry (10.4%) was the least-sought type of dental service, its demand has increased over the years.

Tips for Saving on Dental Fees

Although there isn’t much the patients can do to prevent the cost of dental treatments from increasing, there are ways they can save up. The most important step is to take care of your oral health to prevent major dental issues.

If a dental procedure is inevitable, talk to your doctor about more affordable options available and payment plans. Check out various clinics to see if you can find one that is affordable and credible. Check their dental reviews to avoid spending lots of money at a clinic and getting shoddy services.

Also, consider investing in dental insurance to cover preventative treatments, basic procedures, and some major procedures such as bridges.

The increasing cost of insurance services is one of the top reasons people avoid going to the dentist. While it may seem like an effective way to keep your bank balance in check, it is not sustainable.

It is best to keep up with your annual dental checkups and to see a dentist for any oral issues as soon as they arise. The most effective way to save up is through dental insurance and seeking payment options. Ultimately, do your due diligence to find a credible and affordable dentist.
