Jury selection begins tomorrow in the U.S. case against El Chapo. The trial will begin the following Monday.
5 weeks ago Damaso Lopez Nunez signed a “Statement of Facts” which was filed with the court. These are 12 facts that Lopez Nunez agrees to, but also one can see that is also a script to what he will be testifying to as a cooperative witness in the trial.
1. From 2001 to May of 2017, was a part of a conspiracy to traffic drugs into the U.S.
2. Until his May 2017 arrest in Mexico, he along with his son, Damaso Lopez Serrano rose to leadership of a “significant faction” of the Sinaloa Cartel, responsible of distribution of tonnage of drugs to the U.S.
3. The defendant and Sinaloa Cartel procured tonnage of quantity of cocaine from Central and South America, the defendant oversaw the financing for these shipments and transporting to key points in Mexico including Culiacán, Sinaloa by land sea and air.
4. The Sinaloa Cartel, especially this “faction” employed “sicarios” or hitmen who carried out numerous acts of violence; murders, kidnappings, tortures, forceful collection of drug debts. He and other members also made bribery payments to public officials. This was in exchange for such things as passage of drugs, and impediments of extradition.
5. While working as a senior official at Puente Grande prison, he facilitated illegal communications of Joaquin Guzmán-Loera while he was incarcerated at the prison. Following Guzmán’s escape, he began working for the Sinaloa Cartel. Eventually becoming a senior leader working closely with Guzmán.
