Regional Mexican Musician Julio Verdugo Killed in Culiacán, Sinaloa

Regional Mexican music singer Julio Verdugo was murdered early Sunday morning in Culiacan, Sinaloa.
Authorities reported that the 23-year-old man was attacked at around 3:30 a.m. in front of his home, located in Los Huizaches neighborhood, on Las Torres Boulevard and Solidarity Avenue.
The victim was reportedly leaving the home in his Dodge Chrysler truck when he was shot dead by a lone gunman who pulled up from the passenger side. He was shot at point-blank range and was killed instantly. Verdugo was not able to react and his body was found on the driver’s seat. Several 9mm bullet casings were collected at the scene.
Julio Verdugo was the lead singer of the group called “Julio Verdugo y Los 3 de Culiacán” (Julio Verdugo and The 3 from Culiacan) and on YouTube his most popular song is “Mi Regalo” (My Gift).

His murder comes week after another regional Mexican music singer, Alex Quintero, was shot to death while at a private party in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. Days prior, the family of singer Alfredo Olivas were shot dead in broad daylight in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Assaults and murders against Mexican musicians are a common theme in the country’s ongoing drug war. In the past, many musicians have been killed by drug gangs for their alleged ties to organized crime, for singing certain ballads glorifying the underworld (songs known as narcocorridos), or sometimes simply for refusing to play more songs to an audience. Anything can get a musician killed in today’s violence-torn Mexico.
