CDN Tropa del Infierno Ambush Soldiers in Nuevo Laredo, 8 Cartel Hitmen Killed

Army soldiers and the National Guard were ambushed twice in one day by Tropa del Infierno hitmen of the Northeast Cartel (or Cartel del Noreste, CDN) in Nuevo Laredo, a border city within the state of Tamaulipas. Both ambushes led to full on gun battles, the result of which left 8 CDN hitmen dead.

On June 1 2021 at approximately 6:50 pm Army (SEDENA) soldiers were ambushed in the Madero neighborhood of Nuevo Laredo, which is on the southeastern side of the city. The ambush took place near Degollado and Durango street. The soldiers were ambushed by vehicles of armed men while they were travelling on Degollado street.

After the armed men began shooting towards them, the SEDENA soldiers returned fire and a full-on gunfight ensued between the two groups. The ultimate result of this firefight was three dead cartel hitmen. Four long barrel firearms were seized afterwards. Reports differ on whether 2 SUVs were seized (as reported by Frontera al Rojo Vivo) or one SUV with armor plating (as reported by Excelsior).

Of note, the location of this firefight occurred just a few blocks away from the U.S. Consulate. U.S. diplomats announced on their social media account:

“The U.S. Consulate is tracking reports of gunfire at various locations in Nuevo Laredo. U.S. government personnel are advised to shelter in place until 6 am on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Please follow local media for updates.”

Roughly an hour later, a second confrontation took place in the Villas de San Miguel neighborhood of Nuevo Laredo, which is on the far west side of the city and a roughly 25 minute drive away. Cartel hitmen reportedly opened fire from inside a black Ford Explorer type SUV at National Guard members on San Eliseo street.

The National Guard members are said to have returned fire and five cartel hitmen were killed. Very few details are available beyond this about the nature and circumstances of this gun battle. Five firearms and two vehicles were seized from the aggressors in the aftermath of this firefight. There are no reports of injuries or deaths on the armed forces side as of the writing of this story.

State level law enforcement officially confirmed eight hitmen were killed on June 1 2021 in Nuevo Laredo. However they clarified that they do not know exactly how the events unfolded due to the fact that the operation and investigation was carried out by SEDENA and the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR). A majority of the news sources consulted write that the cartel hitmen were from La Tropa del Infierno (The Troop of Hell), an armed wing of Cartel del Noreste, a splinter group that emerged from the remnants of Los Zetas.
