Journalist Stabbed to Death in Coahuila; 4th Killed This Year

Saúl Tijerina Rentería was killed in Ciudad Acuña, a border town across from Del Rio, Texas. He is the fourth journalist murdered in Mexico this year.

Journalist Saul Tijerina Renteria was killed in the border town of Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, earlier this week. He was a reporter for multiple online media outlets, including La Voz de Coahuila (The Voice of Coahuila).

According to investigators, Tijerina-Renteria had a second job as a factory (maquiladora) worker. When he left the factory at around 02:40 on Monday, he was reported missing. His body was found inside a vehicle that was abandoned at an intersection hours later.

Press freedom organization Article 19 asked Mexican authorities to investigate whether his murder is related to his journalistic work. State authorities announced that they had arrested two suspects, Juan Lorenzo “N” (aged 23) and Jordi Alejandro “N” (aged 18), for the murder. They were found in possession of a knife that may have been used to kill Tijerina-Renteria.

Last week, reporter Gustavo Sánchez Cabrera was killed by gunfire in the southern state of Oaxaca. That same day, journalist Enrique Garcia was killed in Mexico City.

In May, journalist Benjamín Morales Hernández was kidnapped and murdered in the northern state of Sonora. Two more journalists from Sonora are missing: Pablo Felipe Romero Chavez and Jorge Molontzin Centlal.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to exercise journalism as a profession. Though the figures are often conflicting, press freedom organizations around the world collectively agree that over 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000. Dozens more remain disappeared.

Like in most criminal cases in Mexico, the vast majority of these incidents remain unsolved and with few perpetrators arrested and/or convicted.
