Zacatecas Doctor Shot Dead For Failing to Stop at a Cartel Checkpoint

María Esther Talamantes Bañuelos, a medical radiologist from Zacatecas, was killed by unknown assailants after she refused to stop at cartel checkpoint on the Jerez – Valparaiso highway.

It was first suspected that Maria Esther had lost control of her vehicle during an engine malfunction because her car was found upside down across from the highway.

However, eyewitnesses confirmed to the police that Maria Esther had tried to escape a cartel checkpoint. Moreover, she traveling with someone who survived the attack and confirmed this version to the police. This person’s identity was concealed for security reasons.

News of Maria Esther’s death began to circulate on social media over the weekend. Her companion said that they saw armed civilians at a fake checkpoint. Due to the drug-related violence that plagues the Zacatecas, Maria Esther decided it was better to ignore the cartel members and chose to accelerate through the checkpoint. She was then shot and lost control of her vehicle.

Her body was transferred to the forensic medical service. The autopsy results confirmed that the cause of death were gunshot wounds to her legs. Specialists say that she bled to death at the scene.

This murder occurred just nine days after intern doctor Luis Fernando Montes de Oca Armas and ambulance driver Octavio Romero were killed by suspected cartel members while transporting a pregnant women from Jalisco to Fresnillo, Zacatecas.
