During a hearing held that same day before Judge Beryl Alaine Howell in Courtroom 26A of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., the son of the Michoacan drug lord refused to negotiate a deal involving a recommendation by the U.S. Government that he be sentenced to 40 years in prison instead of life in exchange for pleading guilty to two charges against him.

The U.S. Government formally presented its latest offer to “El Menchito” for a plea deal, and after it was rejected, it was established that the first hearings to prepare for his trial would take place in September 2024.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Dangerous Drugs and Narcotics Section reported in a memorandum the details of the plea offer, which was discussed with “El Menchito” and his defense – comprised of attorneys Jan Edward Ronis and Anthony Colombo Jr.- on April 9 and 25, 2024.

The agreement involved Oseguera Gonzalez pleading guilty to the two charges against him: conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as use or carrying a firearm, in connection with narcotics crimes.

The agreement with the U.S. government also implied that the son of the Michoacan drug lord could be sentenced to life in prison or eventually granted parole with residence in the United States.
