Our Crumbling Foreign Relations

This article covers an Obama administration foreign relations program that is running out of control. The more the Obama administration tries to appease other nations by worldwide presidential apologies, bowing to kings and emperors, backing off from showing strong leadership, making unilateral sacrifices, palling with dictators, and pouring money into outthrust hands, the more other nations despise us.

Does the world love the United States more today than a year ago?  No!  One of my greatest heroes is Dr. Thomas Sowell, an American economist, social commentator, and author who is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, supports my “No!” conclusion.  Sowell (2009) wrote that in ways large and small, domestically and internationally, the West is surrendering on the installment plan to Islamic extremists.

Sowell (2009) further wrote that the late Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn put his finger on the problem when he said, “The timid civilized world has found nothing with which to oppose the onslaught of a sudden revival of barefaced barbarity, other than concessions and smiles.” Solzhenitsyn wrote this long before Barack Obama became the president of the United States (POTUS). However, this administration epitomizes the “concessions and smiles” approach to countries that are our implacable enemies. Western Europe went down that path before us (Sowell, 2009).  However, we now seem to be catching up.

Sowell (2009) further wrote that so many “rights” have been generated out of thin air that many people seem unaware that rights and obligations derive from explicit laws, not from politically correct pieties. If you do not meet the terms of the Geneva Convention, then the Geneva Convention does not protect you. If you are not an American citizen, then the rights guaranteed to American citizens do not apply to you. That should be especially obvious if you are part of an international terrorist network bent on killing Americans. However, bending over backward to be nice to our enemies is one of the many self-indulgences of those who engage in moral preening. Nevertheless, getting other people killed so that you can feel puffed-up about yourself is profoundly immoral. So is betraying the country you took an oath to protect (Sowell, 2009).  That sounds like treason.

Christopher Adamo (2009) reported that, last January 2009, Rush Limbaugh shocked the liberal establishment and much of the world when he flatly assessed America’s prospects under the Obama administration with the words “I hope he fails.” In the minds of myopic leftists who cannot comprehend the possibility of anything succeeding outside of taxpayer-funded government programs, they thought Limbaugh was expressing his desire for America itself to fail. Surely, America could only succeed if Obama succeeds. This is the heart and soul of liberalism. However, like the rest of the liberal philosophy, it is fundamentally wrong. From the welfare state to the public school system to the various “family service” agencies that consistently peddle their poisonous anti-family agenda, liberalism itself fails America on every occasion that it gains any new toehold in society.
