NIES reported the population and sorts of sea invertebrate significantly decreased around Fukushima plant

On 2/4/2016, NIES (National Institute for Environmental Studies)  announced that the invertebrates in intertidal zone are significantly decreased around Fukushima plant port after 311. The report was published on Scientific Reports on the day.

They implemented the study from 2011 to 2013. The sampling locations were over 50 points inside and outside the 20km radius area.

As a result, one of the main species “Thais clavigera” was never found in 30km length of the coastal area from Hirono-machi to Futaba-machi (4. 2012 ~ 8.2012). Because it was easily found in Iwate and Miyagi prefecture, NIES concluded that it is not related to Tsunami damage.

Also the population and the number of sorts of invertebrate were significantly smaller around Fukushima plant than the surrounding areas. Especially it was way smaller in the south area of Fukushima plant port. The number was small even comparing to Tepco’s own research result of 1995.

In the report, NIES stated because none of the new “Thais clavigera” was born in the 30km length of the coastal area, they need to keep watching the rate of reproduction of the local invertebrate.
