Congressman Paul suggested a 10% flat tax at CPAC this year to allow young people to “opt-out” of the system. This was met with predictable hysteria in the media, with talking heads suggesting there would be no police to call for emergencies, or roads to drive on, if such a proposal were enacted. Though it’s not a perfect solution, such a proposal should serve as a driving force for the discussion about the proper role of government in our society and what functions it should be responsible for.
