Why shouldn’t Walmart be free to keep out a union proxy?
Walmart has been receiving negative publicity for discouraging employees from supporting the small but vocal activist group OUR Walmart (Organization United for Respect at Walmart)—a union-backed organization that advocates for higher wages and more benefits for Walmart associates. Are Walmart managers who do this guilty of any wrongdoing?
It is extremely relevant that OUR Walmart has organized protests to intentionally disrupt Walmart stores, including during Black Friday—one of the largest shopping days of the year. It is also extremely relevant that OUR Walmart is backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers. This group has unsuccessfully tried to unionize Walmart stores for over a decade and is infamous for orchestrating the 2003-04 Southern California supermarket strikes, in which 59,000 employees picketed in front of hundreds of stores urging shoppers to go elsewhere. These strikes lasted 145 days, left shelves understocked with basic staples such as meat, produce, and dairy products, and cost supermarkets $2 billion in sales. The UFCW also nearly launched another 60,000-employee supermarket strike in 2011.
Given the UFCW’s history, why shouldn’t Walmart managers be free to actively discourage employees from supporting a UFCW proxy like OUR Walmart? And why shouldn’t they have the freedom to dismiss employees who actively canvass for this group? Shouldn’t Walmart managers have the freedom to choose their own employees?

As a former Walmart manager I can attest that unions are not necessary in Walmart- the employees are treated very well by the company in general. In fact ya the managers that would benefit from unionizing.
The official company position is to be pro-associate rather than anti-union and it works well. All that would happen if unions did take over (which did happen in Canada once) is decreased benefits, worse customer service, and unions walking off with the employees hard earned money.
As for the specific question of this article Walmart managers cannot and will not discourage unions because of the hard lessons learned when that one store was unionized in Canada. Because the management did discourage it the unions argued in court that the fact that the workers voted the union down was irrelevant. The union was forced on them by the court against their will. And benefits were lost.
A few years down the road the union was up for another vote and was overwhelmingly ousted by the employees. Once that mess was cleared up the company actually paid the employees the bonuses they were denied under union rules. Now Walmart has a company policy called TIPS. managers are not to threaten, intimidate, persecute, or spy on suspected union activity in the store. But rather are to treat employees with respect so unions are not necessary.
