Book Review: “Liberty Gulch” By A.G. Fredericks

I want to grab people by the throats, ears or shirt collars and yell, “You must read this book, “Liberty Gulch!” Fredericks writes a novel about a family that sees the world as it will become just before it actually does. It could be our future here in the U.S. years from now or next week. If it happens how will you feed yourself, how will you get around, how will you defend yourself, how will you purchase what you need, how will you keep your house if you have no job and the currency is worthless?

The opening lines grab the reader and never releases:

“Nights were darker ever since the snowstorm took down the power lines. In the past the lines would have been mended in days and power restored. But not anymore.”

We see the action through Ray’s eyes, the father, and we see him grow into a leader even though he doesn’t seek the role. He’s compassionate and he has a moral core.

The author is a Libertarian and so we see the problems wrought by a paternal government that leaves citizens with little means or knowhow to protect themselves.

We also get to ponder the value of pursuing “stuff” and chaining ourselves to a desk to pay for it. Wouldn’t it be better to simplify our lives? However, I would not like to go back to a society without electricity. It’s not an easy life.

Final thought: If the future arrives as it does in “Liberty Gulch,” how prepared are you? Not very, I suspect. A.G. Fredericks has written a novel I wish I’d written and I can’t wait until the sequel.
